WWII German Dagger

Hey everyone, I wasn't sure where to put this so I thought I would start here and see if someone could offer me some help.

This dagger belongs to a family member of my wife's who got it from another friend who's father got it from somebody else!

Yeah....I had a look of confusion on my face after that story but I did say I would try and help her find out some more information on it. She is basically looking for some history on the dagger. Also, if someone has a suggestion about how to clean up the blade without damaging the engraving.

So here are the pictures, my only thought is that it may have been a Navel Officer's dress dagger. Thanks for any help.

If it's real, the handle is missing a twisted wire in the handle helical groove.

Certainly looks like German naval officers dagger. Quite possibly a u-boat officer.

Looks kriegsmarine to me but missing a lot of hardware, G..
Scabbard just doesn't look right, Is that markings for Wehrmacht signal corp???
