WWII Ka-Bar Sheath Notch....why?

I'm going to guess it's there so the previous owner could hang it on the wall when it wasn't being used?

It may be for a stud. That way you don't have to remove your belt or remove other things on the belt if you want to put it on your belt.

It was so he could slip it on a button, similar to what the Mora sheaths are capable of.

As far as I know, that was not a factory option, but easily done.

Thanks guys----that's an interesting idea for an alternative way to carry.

GI's were men of necessity during that era. More than likely, his uniform had a rivet or button somewhere where he chose to carry his blade, or perhaps his LBV or some other strap was in the way and could not permit him to belt the knife up.

Either way, that brings some history of the previous owner to the blade, which, makes it worth infinitely more, or at least to me it would.
