Hello all, I'm new to this forum. Looks like there's tons of great info here. Well, to my question. I collect militaria from all over and from various time periods. I've recently started looking for some Nazi-German knives. I'm looking for the bolo and bowie style knives that were issued to the army NCOs. I've found some authentic originals that start at about $1500. I'm wondering if any companies produce accurate replicas of these knives. From what I've been able to find, nobody does. Does anyone have any ideas on this subject. Thanks.

Hello SirDouglas! Welcome to BladeForums

Yes indeed, there is a great wealth of information available here. However, most of the folks in this forum are into much more recent knives. You might try posting this question in the Bernard Levine's Knife Collecting and Indentification forum here in this site. Bernard is a professional historical knife expert and may be able to give you some good advice.

Also, look into getting Knife World, a great monthly magazine (newspaper style). You can get it free for three months via their web site. They frequently have articles about military knives. Also, Northwest Knives carries a lot of antique military knives: www.nwknives.com

SirDouglas,

Welcome, it good to see a fellow military knife collector.

Nazi knives are usually better left to the advanced collector. As you have already noticed prices for original pieces can be significant and there are many fakes and reproductions in circulation. The last thing you want to do is put out $1000 for a $50 fake; but, it happens to alot of people in this area.

If, you want to get into this, you should go to your local book dealer and get some references texts. Fortunately, there are many books that have been published in this area, and you should be able to dig up 20-30 titles specifically on German (Nazi) WWII knives. Beyond the books, go to as many local shows as you can and get familiar with examples of these knives. Some of the fakes are very good and hard to identify unless you have actually handled the real thing. I am sure that you will run across many dealers that will be happy to share some of what they know.

I am not sure which bolo you are looking for (the RAD maybe), but reproductions of some of them are available here.

Keep an eye out for the original knives. Most of these sell for significantly less than $1500 and they are far more likely to retain their value.
