Cool Les - great idea. Will that be a 'net based venture, with on-line pics?

My advice is good pictures and a search engine.
The nice thing about "The Cutting Edge" was the mass quantities of knives. The downside was the lack of alphabetical order in the catalogs.

What is your commision rate?

Boy, what an opportune time you have chosen to do this. With the Cutting Edge being gone, you will definitely be filling a need.

Can't wait. It's something I've been claiming for a long time. I knew it couldn't happen with Cutting Edge monopolizing the attention of customers. This is going to be great.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all of the encouragement.

Bob and I have a "little" knife show we have to attend this weekend in Atlanta.

After that, the web site will be started on. Yes Anthony it will have a search engine. That is a good idea.

I like the idea of putting knives into categories myself.

This site will only contain custom knives. No Randall's, Busse's, etc.

The consignment fee is 30% (3% of that goes to the credit card company and the tax man will get his share as well).

This site will have links on both my site and Bob's site. We actually have knives inbound already.

We are always looking for suggestions. The site will continue to develop after we get the basic one up. I have found that even with my site being up for 5 years there are always ways to improve it.

Again, thank you for your early support.

Hi Les,

Congrats on your new venture. A quick question...who sets the price, you or the seller??

Thanks,
RL

Les,

One thing I recommend is that it be made easy to browse by a variety of things, most important price ranges and maker's name.

It's also important to have a page with the latest 20 or 30 knives entered, with the newest knives at the top and so on.

Thumbnails should be the main navigation tool (they are the main navigation tool for me when I browse dealers' sites.)

I'm not a big fan of categorization myself, outside of maker's name and price.

Some of the best features I like are:
- Nordicknives new arrivals (Bladegalery is good to, but the pics take too much time to load and it's never clear which order they're in). The page should limit itself to a thumbnail, name of the maker, and price. Bob Neal's just arrived page would be better with name + price.
http://www.nordicknives.com/knife_type/whats_new.html

- KnifeArt 1-page masterlist of all the names available.

Just my opinion...

Hi Robert,

One of the advantages of consigning a knife with us is our knowledge of the custom knife secondary market.

While we encourage all of clients to price their knives. We will advise you on a "realistic" price for any consigned knife.

The object after all is to sell your knife.

So Les, is this the big announcement you were talking about or is there still something else that we can expect to hear from you?

A 30% consignment fee can translate into hundreds of dollars on even mid-range customs. Compared to the thirty dollar membership fee here, or a nominal listing fee on eBay, this 30% consignment fee may seem like a relatively high transaction cost to incur. What will the seller expect to receive for that higher fee? Better execution? Added convenience? Will you take the pictures, write the descriptions, actively seek out buyers, market the knives, arrange for shipping, etc?

Hi Derrick,

You wrote:

"What will the seller expect to receive for that higher fee? Better execution? Added convenience? Will you take the pictures, write the descriptions, actively seek out buyers, market the knives, arrange for shipping, etc?"

The answer is yes.

The Cutting Edge charged 25% fee for the black and white photo that was shown in the catalog. The ones in the color photo were 35%.

So actually, we are a little less expensive. As each knife will have it's own photo and description. Not meerly lumped into a group shot.

Additionally, this will not be a monthly print type catalog. Where you may have to wait for over a month, just for your knife to finally be put in front of potential customers. It will be available world wide 24/7/365.

You are exactly right. The 30% is for the convenience to its clients and expertise of the owners that www.customknifeconsignment.com offers. Which no other source on the internet can provide.

After all there are only two custom knife dealers in the US that set up at least 5 custom knife shows a year and have web sites.

Those dealers are Les Robertson and Bob Neal.

Derrick, your point is well taken that other sources can sell your knife for less money. Then again, no matter what service or product you look for, you can always find it cheaper.

Perhaps a question you should ask is: Do these other sources specifically target custom knife buyers as their one and only priority?

Hope this answers your questions.

Hi Keith,

Yes, this is the big announcement. I think this should keep Bob and I occupied for a few months. :D

Thanks for your answer Les. Good presentation, market penetration, and the credibility you and Mr. Neal bring to the table can certainly enhance a seller's ability to realize the full value of his knife.

I look forward to seeing the first batch of offerings!

Wow, 30% commission fee, that's a great deal!

Perhaps, Les, you could even sign up for a dealer membership before you start advertising your business here.
