Posted a reply to your blog. After looking at pics I'm now unsure of what side the bevel is on that broad axe. At first glance it looks to be a lefty but now I'm thinking that might be a trick of the camera. What side was it on?
 
I think the bevel was right, bu I think the setup was wrong. A.) I had no safety gear (i.e. high cut steel toe boots with good tread), beyond that, the log was too high. I could've been using the wrong axe, but I really don't think so. Overall, it just wasn't set up for me or safely.
