Following the advice of Ron@SOG, I post here the following thread:
I would appreciate much any advise/opinion about SOG's X-42 Mini, concerning the strength of handle, lock, purpose, etc. I would like to have some knife in BG-42, and it is not easy to find it among the production knifes (custom knifes are rather expensive and it is almost impossible to find US customs in Europe. Sebenza's price in, e.g., Germany is more then $600).

Regards,

Franco

Hi Franko,

While you're waiting for others to write, let me give some personal perspectives of the X-42 AutoClip.

The strength and durability of Zytel has really proven itself as an outstanding handle material and from what I've seen, the AutoClip's handle holds up extremely well...I’d say nearly indestructible.

The lock is the very traditional and proven lockback. Users find it quite secure.

The BG-42 steel is, of course, what sets this knife apart. Getting a super steel like this into an affordable production knife is quite unheard of, but SOG has impressively pulled it off.

No, it's not a Sebenza and we wouldn't think of putting the AutoClip in a comparison with it.

If there is any questions you have of SOG, please let me know.

Franco, you should get one. I've heared (here on bladeforums) that the SOG AutoClips are great and so is SOGs heat treat (having 3 SOGs, I can attest to that my self:)). I'm saving for either an X-42 AutoClip or a Field Pup (AUS8) can't deside, so I may just get both.:)

SOG currently has X-42 AutoClips 2nds in stock and a Factory 2nd is 40% off retail. (Retail on the X-42 AutoClip is $69.95). Now, if I was out of college and had a good job, I'd get 2 of them. One Plane edge and the other Serrated.:D

Let us know when you get one.;)

I forgot to mention that I have been carring a Gerber E-Z-OUT in ATS-34 for 2 1/2 years. The handle is Zytel and it has a steel pocket clip. The Zytel handle has held up very well, (looks almost brand new) even to light prying. So, I know that Zytel is strong stuff.

My main complaint with the E-Z-OUT is the steel clip. It tends to catch on things when I'm camping and it becomes loose (almost lost the knife a few times do to the clip bending). Thats where the AutoClips shine. If there clip is loose, just twist the thumb wheel and the clip is tight. No more loose clip and the knife stays locked (if you make it that tight) where you put it.:)

Now, if SOG made an X-42 Outdoor AutoClip with a 3.6" blade (or clip point) I'd sell off a knife or two or skimp on food so I could get one. HINT HINT:D

Franco,

As the proud owner of a variety of SOG knives I can attest that you will not be disappointed with any knife in the X-42 line(any SOG for that matter).

I own many knives including ones from Emerson, Benchmade, SOG, Gerber, Cold Steel, and Spyderco.

My left pocket carry knife is a SOG X-42 S84S Mini Auto-Clip.

My right pocket carry knife is almost always the SOG Pentagon Elite PE14. See the following link.
http://www.sogknives.com/pentagon.htm

I also own and highly recommend the following X-42's. The Titanium Nitride finish is one to behold.

SOG-T64 - Black Titanium Nitride Finish (TiNi), Plain Edge
SOG-T64S - Black Titanium Nitride Finish (TiNi), Serrated Edge
SOG-T84 - Black Titanium Nitride Finish (TiNi), Plain Edge

You specifically asked about the strength of the handle, lock, purpose, etc.

I've never had any problems with the strength of the handle. Unfortunately, one day my Mini X-42 managed to make it's way out of my pocket.

This primarily happened because the knife was sharing some pocket space with a cell phone clip and I was fishing my keys out of the pocket and dragged it out. Well, it dropped to the pavement and I stepped on it. At first, there were some bad scuffs, however, they are not noticeable now. The handle and lock are still strong. No doubt.

With respect to purpose, I've used the Mini Auto for many things including: cutting rope, cardboard, plastic wrap, plastic tie wraps, tape, coupons out of the paper, etc. etc. The steel is strong and the blade maintains it's edge.

Everytime I pull out my SOG, people ask me about it.

Get one, you'll love it. It's light, functional, and adapts to any pocket. One twist, and it adjusts.

I've lurked around Bladeforums for about one year and finally created a userid. Note my userid and you'll know my favorite knife.

Hey "eyeluvsogs,"

First of all, a very warm welcome to the membered ranks of Bladeforums. It's great to see you come out of the shadows to weigh in on this thread.

...and thank you for those comments. It's always wonderful to heard the feedback from a specific knife owner, and now Franco has.
