Hey, I need to order wife's christmas present, and quick. She really wants a wooden jewlery box, maybe a dresser-top or free-standing unit. Been asking for one for years...

But all of the boxes I see in stores are cardboard / veneer / plastic crap. Google search turned up thousands of products claiming to be solid wood, but I'm skeptical.

So can anyone recommend an online resource for SOLID WOOD jewlery boxes?

Sincere thanks if anyone can help,
-Bob

Thanks. Those are great looking boxes. But they seem kind of expensive. It wouldn't be too much to spend if they were larger and had many, many more compartments. My wife has a lot of crap... most of which I bought for her.

I'm not totally ruling out the Tomway boxes, but I had in mind something more like this:

or:

or:

Any comments or other suggestions?

These are available in a number of woods.

I am a bit concerned by their use of the word 'finish', with cherry and mahogany but the oak ones seem to intimate solid oak.

The most popular XLarge Oak Jewelry
box from Reed and Barton.

#RB664 Solid Oak Jewelry Chest

E-Bay solid wood boxes. I see one nice one.

I love that one you posted on the top left. Looks like cherry.

After browsing Google for hours, I've come accross these two woodworkers' websites:

Solid hardwoods with various finishes.

Made from solid wood (what kind? I don't care as long as it's not cardboard) and choice of finishes.

Wife wouldn't like the style, but this guy's stuff is beautiful!

Guess I need to get on the phone tomorrow and see if any have a nice box in stock... Probably not time for a custom order.

Thanks for reading,
Bob

Jewleryboxesbyreid sent an e-mail back this evening. it's a one-man handcrafted operation, so naturally there are no boxes currently in stock, and ordering one made could take months.

I love Gerstner chests and their "limited edition jewelry chest" is beautiful, but it's so dang small. If it were three times bigger, had some drawers, or something...

Hansen wood works makes a beauty of a box.
Do they have a website or online store? It didn't pop out in a Google search - there was a Thor Hansen Custom Woodwork site, but I didn't see any boxes for sale...

Thanks for the help so far!

Now Bob W. I am sure there are some beautiful jewelry boxes that freestand and are made of wood and you are just going to have to come off the money to get her a nice one, she is worth it I'm sure. For shame the man who won't do that for his lovely wife.:(

That's why I'm asking. I don't mind spending some $$, but I gotta find something suitable. The only jewelry boxes I see in local stores are made of glued cardboard.

If Gerstner "feminized" some of their full-sized products, that would be perfect... And I wouldn't mind paying for it.

So Cindy, got any recommendations? AFAIK, you're the first female person to respond. What brand/woodworker is your jewelry box? Is it freestanding or tabletop? Solid wood?

Best Wishes,
-Bob

I have purchased in the past year a valet watch box for myself and a nice Reed and Barton box for my wife from jewelryboxshop.com. They are both solid cherry, made in USA. There were nicely packaged and arrived promptly. I have no reservations about recommending them.

Thank you very much. Although I like the artist-made chests, these for instance http://www.woodenwood.com/jewelry_chest.htm , the style doesn't really match our historic home or wife's antique dressing table. I really like the style of many of the "Reed and Barton" chests, but have never seen one in person and had questions regarding their quality and construction.

You've answered my questions nicely. Thank you very much. Now I just need to select which specific box. I'll let you guys know how it goes over with Wife.

Those look nice, but you have to read the description carefully. Many of them say this:
• Material:Wood/MDF/Veneers
But some are real wood too. Thanks for the tip.

Sometimes I wish we had a mall. Then I think of the traffic, lights, and noise and am thankful we don't have one.

Best Wishes,
Bob

Bob, she has antiques so she will be on guard about how a piece like this could compare to your furniture. Can you just give her the money? To be safe, 500.00?

I know what you mean Cindy. Every time we buy something nice, all of our old stuff looks even more like crap. That is what you meant?
