x-pack water filtration

Yes, I have some experience.. It IS slow, but in arid climates where all water sources are suspect for contaminants, it removes pretty much everything. Carry 2 so you alway have water that's clean..

As for the syrup.. It's a sugar/electrolyte mix that lowers the osmotic pressure of the "liquid" on the drinking side of the membrane, so the water is "pushed" from the high pressure side, to the low pressure side.. We have used regular salt/sugar mix and gatoraid mix, it worked ok..

Biggest problem is expense.. (Unless your Uncle Sam issues them to ya!) At $60 a piece, I keep one on hand as a last resort, not as a primary means of water purification. Don't forget, they do expire too..

Thanks for the review, exactly what I was looking for and it even provides a link to a much cheaper product that is basically the same thing.

I have the LifePack system that I bought from Cabela's. The filter and 6 syrup bottles weigh about 2lbs, using my calibrated arm. It seems by the tests to be a great filter system but slow and heavy. The cost per litre and a half is about $5.00. Still I plan to carry this summer on a 60 mile backpacking trip. Other than that I have no other info.

I always refer to this site.
