You can get the live membership cards at just about any store such as Best Buy, Walmart, or others...You can get them at amazon dot com as well..Right around $40.00 a year on sale.
It will have a menu to join live or something like that..Just follow the prompts after you get your membership card...Alternatively, you can join by giving M$ money when you go to sign up if you do not feel like waiting.
Or go to xbox.com and buy the membership (typing in the xbox sux)

They have the Xbox wireless adapters by microsoft for around $100 but on newegg.com I have seen them for cheaper and all you need is that and a wireless network to connect to and you are good. That is what I have for my 360 and all I do is turn it on and the xbox connects automaticaly. To get the xbox live you are going to need the gold if you want to play games and such and download content and talk to friends and that does go for about $40 a year and that is what I have on a recurring yearly payment and I love xbox live.
