We need a new system. We still use the PS3 for streaming, but we are having some issues with it. I want a PS4 kids want Xbox for games. I know NOTHING about this. Why is one better than the other?
Thanks.

One isn't really any better than the other. Unless, of course, you're a fanboy.

Look at the game set, and decide from there. I bought the PS4 when it was time to upgrade. My primary reason was for the Gran Tourismo franchise, since racing games are my thing. Waited a year after getting my PS4 for the newest version, just to find out it sucks. Now I wish I'd have bought the Xbox so I could have Forza instead. Such is life. There's still a bunch of good games.

So look at the platform specific franchises. See which platform offers the game you (or the kids) really want, and go from there. As for the cross-platform stuff, unless you're a hardcore gamer (in which case you'd already have both systems) you won't notice any real difference in gameplay.

If the kids are going to play online a lot . Get the system that your kids friends have . This way he can play them online . I bought the PS4 for my son the reason I got it was most of his friend play online line games with the PS4 .

Most of the time your friends all have the same system, be it Xbox or PlayStation. So if your kids are saying Xbox it's probably because their friends have it as well.

PS4's are better/cheaper overall(coming from an Xbox One guy), Xbox requires you to have Gold to play online which is like $40-60 a year. I believe you can play online with PS4's for free, only paying for an account if you want some extras like free games and such(could be wrong, so don't quote me on that).

I'd say go with what they're asking for, or at least make them decide amongst themselves.

Get PS4. The PS4 has tons of exclusive amazing titles. Not to criticize your kids but they are flat out wrong about XBOX having more games than PS4. There are virtually no titles that are exclusive fox XBOX that are worth a damn. Most of XBOX’s extremely limited library of exlusive games where panned by video game critics.

The PS4 is all around the better system in my opinion.

I find myself doing less and less gaming these days (wife is happy about that), so I'm still rocking a PS3, one of the original fatties in fact, lol. We watch Blu-ray movies with that, stream on it, and I play an occasional game still. Definitely gets plenty of use, and it keeps plugging along all these years later. Haven't had a good reason to upgrade yet. I actually might skip the current generation, and wait for the next to upgrade.

So for me I still have and play my PS3 but it gets more use as a streaming device. I also still have my PS2 but don't use it for technical complications, TV component video or composite video ports aren't working, but hope to hook it back up. I would probably at this point go for a PS4 myself but I don't game near as much as I used to and if I do it mostly is on my PC now. I mostly play older titles bought or re-bought through things like Good Old Games who sell DRM free PC games. I do little online gaming as I rarely buy titles new, ~$60 new per game, and most these games online play dies in a matter of months yet my free to play PC games and old PC games I can still find active online players and communities.

Enough side tracking my personal vote is for PS4 I have been Sony loyal so far but mostly due to the titles I found exclusive to them despite the fact my friends had XBoxes. What thier friends have if a factor to consider for what suites your kids "needs" but sometimes it works the other way having the console the friends don't have and allowing them to all enjoy those exclusive titles. I do feel besides Nintendo there isn't much exclusivity left in the console gaming market. Most console games also end up ported to PC as well further diluting said exclusivity.
