I don't know why I've never done a bolstered handle before. I like the way I look and it didn't see too daunting of a project, but for some reason I had never done one, until just recently.

Here is a modified Model One with a longer handle and blade, a bit over 8 inches overall length in D2 tool steel with dovetailed carbon fiber bolsters with a black glass pin, orange G-10 handle slabs, and white G-10 liners, hand sanded to 800 grit.

I like the way it turned out and plan on playing with some more bolster/slab combinations really soon. This one should be with me in Vegas in Sept.

Thanks for looking guys!

I haven't tried bolsters yet either Jonny, I can't wrap my brain around lining everything up.
The knife looks awesome as usual, and the color/pin combo looks really nice.

Ben, it ain't so bad buddy! I had fun doing it actually. I'd love to see some of your designs with some bolsters:thumbup:

Like to see the bolster in steel or titanium....I was always of the opinion that anything but(damascus, timascus, mokume...excepted) was a lazy ass move.

AND...please, for fuks sake.....taper a tang here and there...willya?

IMO.:)

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Haha, way to keep it real, STeven!!:D

Just so happens I've got some Ti bars in just the right thickness laying around.....I'll have to give that a shot:thumbup:

Tapered tangs?........I know, I don't do enough of 'em. Let me see what I can do!

The carbon fiber looks great. It keeps the weight down and gives a nice contrast. While tapered tangs look nice for a user like the one you have there a full tang is a much better choice if the butt ever needs to be used for giving something a whack in the field.

Nice work and well thought out.

I dig that - a LOT. Dark grey and safety orange are a great combo to my eyes. Do more!!

Very nice work, Jonny! Very clean, as we've come to expect from you.

One question though. Why not hide the "pin" on the bolster as well (assuming there are hidden pins in the handle)? And also agreeing with STeven on tapering the tang.

Ted,
There are no hidden pins on this knife. The orange slab and the CF bolsters are epoxied to each other and to the liner material before the knife is glued up. In addition to the usual divots I drill in my slabs and liner material, there are some small divots drilled into the 45 degree cuts where the pieces dovetail together for expoxy to collect in and strengthen the bond. The front pin and the tube in the butt are there for lateral strength like usual.

I've been meaning to play around with some hidden pin designs though. I'll get on that soon!

Good Stuff Jon,

Yep I want to see a tapered tang too. My knife making mentor/instructor/teacher/mate Bruce Barnett JS wont heat treat anything for me now unless I have tapered the tang. Its a great motivator!
