Hello,

First, I must say that I am rather embarrassed to make this post as I am generally a pretty mechanically minded person but this has me stumped.

After many years of knife ownership I finally purchased my first Hinderer, a new standard 3.5" XM-18 with a spanto blade and a grey scale. When I received the knife it was excellent (blade centered, smooth opening perfect flip, etc.). The only problem was that as this knife will be a user on our farm I wanted an orange scale that it would be easier to find should the knife "escape." I purchased an orange Hinderer scale and the Hinderer Armor's tool, read a few posts on here, and watched a few youtube videos. Replacing the scale seemed like a pretty straightforward process and it was. . . . . until it came time to adjust the pivot screw.

If I adjust the screw until the blade is centered it is very difficult to open. If I set the screw so the knife opens as it did when I received, it the blade is off-centered. I have tried re-installing the old scale, rotating the pivot, made countless adjustments, etc. and the issue still persists. From examining the knife everything appears to be in alignment. When I installed the orange scale the knife remained assembled with the exception of the scale removal so no parts fell out of the knife.

Any ideas for addressing this issue from the experts here?

A technique that works for many:

1. Open blade to 90 degrees and tighten pivot so that it is really tight.

2. Close the blade and loosen frame screws so they aren’t tight, but still holding the frame together.

3. While the blade is still in the closed position, pull blade towards the side you want the blade to move.
It sometimes is helpful here to use something ( piece of cardboard, folded business card, toothpick etc) to hold the blade where you want it.

4. While the blade is in the desired position, tighten the frame screws.

5. Loosen the pivot and adjust it to the desired tension.

:)

RubiconSS I just adjusted the knife per your instructions and this appears to have addressed the issue. Thanks!

I look forward to participating in this forum. I'm sure this won't be my last Hinderer.

Glad to hear it. I did not author the steps but was happy to be able to pass it on
With positive results. Enjoy and welcome to the forum.
