Xm-18 3 gen-6 decision..

Ugh... I want it so bad! Either black or blue slicer with choil and stonewashed blade. The problem is diminishing returns on expensive knives. Case-in-point - my small 21... I sold it because I would rather have the $300 I knew I could get it for it than the knife itself. Sold my sage three and dice for the same reason which left me only with a para 3, a para 3 Sprint run, and a 556-1. I'm worried that I will buy the xm-18 3, love it, then decide the same thing I decided with the small 21. What it comes down to is - My 566-1 and 2 para 3s basically will do the same things that the xm-18 3 will. Yes the Hinderer can last a lot longer, but what am I really doing with my knives that will break them? Not much... let alone the fact that if I break or lose one of my cheaper knives they are easily replaced - not the case with the Hinderer. Decisions decisions... any advice or thoughts would be appreciated!

Sounds like owning one is the only way to scratch that itch.

Like just about anything, it loses some of its value over time. I have Hinderer knives, I like Hinderer knives. They aren't magical but they do cut things, like many other knives do.

You might buy one and find it's your grail and it will never leave your side. That by the way has never happened to me.

My suggestion would be buy one if you must and then sell it if you get tired of it. You'll lose some money of course. Better yet, pick up one off the exchange. Some of the depreciation will have already happened and you could sell it for essentially what you paid.

With Hinderer you get what you pay for. Side by side with a sebenza, I’d take a hinderer every time. You can get your blade reprofiled, anodize it, customize it, and now, swap out the pivot system to fit your needs. If you know exactly what you want in terms of an xm18, then buy that configuration. I don’t worry about losing my knives, really. I have never lost a knife. If you use your Hinderer within reason it’d never break. To this day, it seems xm18 sell around 25-30 percent off retail. That’s not bad. But I try to buy hinderer was much as I can, not sell them!

Since you have already had pricey knives it should be an easy decision. Hind are quite nice, for sure tops in the user index.

There is no bullet proof logic to justify spending that much on a knife. That said, I currently have more than a couple Hinderers. They are awesome knives, but certainly don't cut any better than your Spyderco.

Definitely watch the exchange for a used one knowing that you will save $100 up front and likely be able to resell it with out losing much.

Gen 6 is nice especially with the smaller/lighter blade on the 3", but not a requirement IMO. Definitely consider the no choil if you have large hands because the choil is quite small and basically unusable for some. It also gives you about the same edge as the 3.5...

IF you are happy where you are now, stay there. The Hinderer is a very fine knife as was your Sebenza. I enjoy both enough to pay the extra money and it doesn't cost that much per day (how I justify) to get that enjoyment. The Hinderer is still just a knife and will not cut any better than what you have-maybe worse due to the thick stock.
When money isn't infinite you have to choose where it's use is justified to you-can't buy everything. Buying high quality knives is one place I spend mine. Only you can decide where you want to spend yours.

Buy it used and use the heck out of it. At that point, the value is diminished enough that you have to love and keep it. Sometimes I've found that's the easiest way to come to terms with owning certain "tools".

Are you buying to collect or use? If to collect, get it. If to use, will it really replace the knife in your pocket? If not, leave it alone. Just my two cents.

This is great advice if you want something to beat on, check the exchange. Also consider some of the Hinderer designs from other companies, like Kershaw, ZT, or Viper. They're not exactly the same, but they may help scratch the itch.

Thanks for all the great answers! If I get it I definitely plan to use it... Yeah - if worse comes to worse I can always sell it like I did with the small 21... I think you all know I'm going to wind up getting it - lol.

Yes if you buy new from a dealer and after a while you plan to get rid of it, you will lose at least $100. Does that amount of $ matter much to you? Only you can tell.

Is this your first Hinderer? Are you more interested in knowing what an XM-18 is like? If yes, I suggest to buy second hand gen 4, which can be had for $280 give or take. I have three and after replacing with PB washers, their actions are all just as good as I want. TBH, I am not intrigued by the new triway system and ss insert. On a beefy Hinderer I do not need ball bearings or inserts. But again this is just my opinion.
