I'm getting an XM-18 3.5" for my son in a few weeks I believe (per the powers to be ) - a soldier - as a gift. What do you guys recommend flipper or thumbstud only? Plus, do they all have the same blade or different ones? I like the look of the "spanto" style - how about you? :)

I really like the flipper option. I think being able to quickly open it one handed would be an asset to your son. I have a custon XM-18 without the flipper and it just seems to be missing the coolness factor. The Gen III Spanto blade would be a good choice.

Agreed from seeing images, Gen III Spanto & the "coolness factor" (w/flipper) is kickin!

I'm just the opposite on the flipper as it doesn't allow the knife to sit on the edge whe its open. When I had mine(big regret selling it:o) it was a non flipper as I thought it was cleaner looking.

It's a Hinderer- it'll do the job either way. It's kind of like asking if you should get brown leather seats or beige leather seats in your new Rolls Royce Phantom!

Interesting. I don't think I have ever sat a knife down on its edge. I guess I just always set them down on their side.

For a soldier, I'd recommend one with flipper,,, it acts as a handguard when deployed, which is beneficial in a tactical situation,,,

I have the flipper and I like it. It opens equally well with the thumbstuds or flipper.

He's gonna love it. :) I tried (pleaded actually) to get an XM-24 but it won't be until fall and he'll be gone. :( I'm gonna get one of those ZT 0550's for myself whenever they come out. Pretty nifty IMHO.

I do as well, but sometimes when i'm just admiring a knife for no other reason than to just look at at, I'll place like that.:)

I love my flippers.
Also makes for a little bit of fun while watching TV. It drives my wife crazy because all she hears is CLICK CLICK CLICK all night long.

+1 :D She gives me her harda** look and says "are you doing that just to drive me crazy?".......hahahaha....."like it or not learn to love it".....Nature Boy Ric Flair

I would go for the flipper too.I like them like that.In fact I have 2 18 and a 24 and they're all flippers.

I prefer non-flippers. Flippers have the "coolness" factor but IMO (and MHO only) they are less useful. The grip of the XM-18 is fine without the flipper as a guard. No flipper means it's going to junk up the pocket less when tip up and allow it to sit lower when tip down. I also can't imagine using a flipper with heavy gloves on being entirely comfortable. I believe that the flipper also gets in the way of several grips when using the knife. YMMV.

You have an XM-24? I thought they had just been prototyped and not released.

They are for sale as customs, but only at shows.
At blade there were 9 in total.Mine was one of them.
Regular production isn't started yet.

Thumbstud.

Most flippers, including Hinderers, get in the way when closing. The flipper hits your thumb before the blade is is a good position to close it the rest of the way. It gets pretty annoying.
They aren't any faster to open either.

I specifically ordered mine without a flipper.

How is the deployment speed on the XM-18 with the thumbstud? Quick or like a Sebenza (must push the blade through the entire range)?
