I was gifted an anything knife I want for Christmas knife and I have chosen Hinderer. I would like to ask what grind is the most practical? Spanto, slicer or Wharncliffe. I will use this knife as my edc. I am a rancher and it will be brought to task, cutting every day.

Personally the spanto. If I wanted a slicing knife, I think there are much better choices on the market. For a very sturdy abuser, the hinderer is incredible. I gotta admit that I'm finding it not exactly for me though.

What is the dislike?

Spanto is the iconic grind from Hinderer. I have all 3 production grinds and I rotate each every 2 days. I really haven't found that they can't do any task at hand. So it's just kind of a personal preference as to which you like better. The slicer does slice better if that's what you're asking over the spanto. The Spanto was made so that you can pry with. Although I wouldn't doubt the slicer. The wharnie is great for EDC! But the tip is more fragile.

Hope that helps :)

Very much, thank you:thumbup:

Dickgrande I am semi retired but also help out on my boyhood family farm and find the Hinderer XM 18 3.5 Spanto ground Blade a very good all around cut anything blade design. Good choice on the Hinderer, the open frame construction allows dried dirt, hay and straw chafe, and other debris to be easily blown out. Cuts through plastic twine, hay, opens feed bags and cuts anything I ask of it. It disassembles very easily for cleaning and no ball bearings to get gummed up either. BTW nice gift!

I don't know if it's your first XM, but I always suggest starting with a 3.5" Spanto Flipper. Because once you own one; you then know...what you want in your second and all following XM (or other knife) purchases.

You're welcome :) And Final Option has brought up many valid points why you've made a great choice.

Let us know what you choose and definitely post up pics when it arrives

It's just too much knife. I find now that I need something with more, I dunno, finess mostly. When doing hard work, I usually have my rodent solution on me and use it. The large Sebenza is more suited to my daily grind of food prep, cutting cardboard, stripping wire, and activities that I use a knife for.

I don't want to detract from the hinderer. It's a hell of a knife. It's designed to be used and used hard and I have no doubt in its ability for that. But it's not great and turning onions into little itsy bitsy pieces for me. If I wanted to stick to a folder for my woods work days, splitting wood for cooking outdoors, etc, it would win that spot hands down.

SVT's points are exactly why I like the slicer grind for edc. The tip is plenty strong for light prying but the grind is a little better for finesse work. To me, it's the perfect grind for a versatile, yet capable knife. I also have a sebenza 25 and it is a slightly better slicer and therefore slightly better at food prep but the xm18 slicer is my go to. The crk is carried much less now.

I love my 21's to death. To the point that I think i may sell my xm. Glad I did it, had to see what it was about, but I find my CR's to work much better for my uses, and my rodent solution works better for my hard use times.

They're not for everyone! I used to have almost all CRK. I had 5 at one time. I had Mnandi cocobolo, Sebenza 25, Sebenza 21 Insingo w/ micarta inlays, Umnumzaan, and Small 21. I sold or traded every single one besides the small 21 for my small Herd that I have today :)

@SVT...you and I have crossed paths before over in the Swamp...Sup Mane?

Here's the deal guys-n-gals...we all have our preferences and differing perspectives. In addition to that, we all have different needs/wants and even opinions. Ever argue with a loved one?

If I were a "want a knife in my pocket" kinda guy I'd easily put a Sebenza or even a more common knife in my pocket without a worry.

But for me and my liking...it's gotta be a tough, reliable, with design elements that speak to me...item to get into my pocket / onto my person or gear bags...and as of right now, the Hinderers (and on occasion my Bussekin) are what work for me. It's a personal choice.

Hey man!

Personal choice. I are absolutely correct. That's why I stressed my opinion. Sounds like the xm will be ideal for the Op.

Back on point. The Op asked a question and it was - "Which Hinderer Grind do I get".

That is the discussion topic.

The slicer is probably the best grind overall for "slicing" (LOL). However, I slightly reprofiled my spanto about 23 deg per side, and now I think it could handle 99% of the "slicing" tasks the slicer or wharnie can. If you need blade/tip strength over delicate cuts you can't lose with the spanto.

In a few months it won't matter - you'll have all three grinds like everybody else around here hehe!

500lbman is right about having all 3 :) We talked about Rick and Rob sprinkling something on them to making them so addicting ;)
