It happens, hype, anticipation etc...

stick with it for a while is all I can suggest, I stupidly offloaded one after the same feeling and have been looking for one ever since.

I've been not-so-thrilled with knives that I've wanted for some time. I would agree that you should probably hold onto it to make sure you don't like it, because it will be hard to get back. There shouldn't be any rush to unload it, you'll have no problem selling it at a reasonable price. I wanted a CF/BG42 Military for over a year and when I finally got it, I wanted to sell it. Now I'm reconsidering putting it back onto my "want" list.

I do think all the hype around this knife may give folks some unrealistic idea of the coolness of it. It's certainly my favorite folder overall, but I know that it won't be the case for many people. I would suggest that people who are waiting for one to try not to get so excited about it that you think it'll almost have magical properties. Some folks will find that while on paper it sounds great, but in the hand it's just not that glamorous. And that's fine. This is why there are so many other knives to choose from.

If you're into other high end knives, the XM-18 is great to have to trade. I think it'll give you more options than many other knives in it's price range may. There just seems to be a really wide customer base for it.

Nice! Excuse my ignorance, but is it a 3" or 3.5" model? I'm expecting to receive my first XM-18 next week. A 3.5" flipper model. I couldn't fight the urge anymore. I'm trying not to get too excited, but whether it's a $500 knife or a $50 knife I get excited either way.

I think it's a common thing that you're feeling. When I had received my long awaited Large Classic Sebenza I was like, "Is this it? This is what all the hype is about?" After carrying it for a few days I fully understood and little else finds it's way into my pocket now.

I'd really like to hear how you feel about the knife after you've carried it for a few days. Please report back and let us know how you like your new XM-18. I look forward to your post.

I agree with most, don't be to quick to dismiss it, because it is going to be a pain to get another. I think it will grow on you with a little use. Good luck however it turns out.

yep, there's something wrong with you! XM-18'S are great knives if you can afford to use them! i don't believe in putting knives away and not use them. that is a very interesting choice of colors for the grip. you can always send it to me,and i will keep it until you come to your senses! :D

I recently got my XM-18 from Rick and had kind of the same reaction. I really like my Hinderer but it doesn't feel as comfy in my hand as some of my other knives and doesn't cut as well. I can't deny the build quality and I really appreciate Rick's customer service . Also take into consideration that I've had it for a little over a week. My EDC is still my Spyderco Military. As I say this I notice the Hinderer is sticking out of my pocket...... I'm a slut.

Looks fantastic to me, I'd love to have one.

Will Rick fit you a second blade? If so, you could experiment with thinning one out.

Lots of things in life get overrated. Remember, its just a knife. I find I usually have the opposite effect. I totally love stuff when I first get them, and then after a couple weeks I se them for what they are and thats when my true judgement happens. For now I only have 3 edc folders that have stood he test of time. The rest have either gone into my collection or are sold/gifted. The xm18 was one knife I really wanted but after seeing many reviews and pics, I don't think its for me. I like knives that slice well and they just don't do it wit their standard profile. Not saying they can't be made to clice well, but thats beyond my tool set.

Good luck with it.

What attracted you to the knife. If it was 'because it's an XM-18', then you're possibly in for disappointment. It's usually a good idea to have a reason to buy something other than the fact that other people want it, unless you are trying to flip it for profit.

You may be suffering from buyer's remorse. Knife collecting is like any hobby, it can get out of control financially. Is this knife putting a dent in your budget? The mere fact that you bought a knife of this quality makes me believe that it isn't.

Sometimes, though, you get something that has a reputation in the collector world, but it just doesn't do it for you. Nothing wrong with that. Sometimes, one can just not "get" a certain brand of knife.

Keep it for a month, use it, maybe it'll grow on you. See how the relationship works before throwing in the towel.

Question, is there enough lockup? The framelock in the next to last picture doesn't seem to have very much engagement.

As a rule I try to keep a knife for at least one year before selling it.
Wouldn't it be nice to have just one knife that you really liked. My Dad carried a Case Stockman in his rfp for 38 years and never needed more knife. Oh to be content.

Hold on to it for a little while. I suspect that if you get rid of it, you will regret it.

I have seen XM-18s sharpened by at least one very capable fellow that has been sharpening knives for awhile and can say that it lacked nothing in the sharpness department. There will always be something that's prettier, a better slicer, a better edc, etc., but if the only issue is that other knives cut better, a skilled person could sharpen that knife to the point where you would probably never see any significant cutting ability differences between that knife and most other very sharp knives.

BTW, I love my 3.5" flipper from Rick. I got it from him directly, and I recall the very pleasant exchange we had that culminated in my getting the knife. As such, Rick made that knife specifically for me, and it therefore means that little extra bit to me. I certainly don't see ever parting with it, and I do see using it up to my dying day. :)

Nope. I had one too,.... didn't care for it, so, I sent it on its way. The good news is that the sale took almost no time, so, I didn't have time to regret it :D

I agree with most everyone here. I too waited for months to snag an XM. I figured it would be the "end all,do all" knife I had been looking for. This was the most I had paid for a knife (and still is) and I set the bar at a lofty height. When it came, I was somewhat let down. It was big and heavy, din't fit my hand well etc. But it is a great knife. With time, it has grown on me. I have thought about selling it, but just as sure as I do i know I will regret it. Hang on to it for awhile. I'm positive if you don't like it you will have no trouble selling it.
