Im getting different answers to a simple question. To change a scale on a Hinderer 3" XM-18 do you need their special tool? Monkeyedge says only a T10 torx is needed? Anyone that has actually done this have a straight answer? Want to get a carbon fiber scale but not sure i will if I am forced to buy a 75 dollar tool that prob cost maybe 5 bucks to make and I would seldom use! Thanks

I do believe the pivot has loctite on it, I've not disassembled my XM-18s. When I turn the pivot the other side spins. You should be able to use a $4 spanner tool for bicycles to accomplish this task. Google it and look at the pictures, that is exactly the tool you need. Save that $71 for a rainy day. ;)

I took a penny and cut a little notch out of it and used that to take my 3" apart.

I went to my local hardware store and bought a #10 spanner bit. It works pretty well and costs a lot less than $70

I changed the scale on mine with two flathead screwdrivers. No problem, no marks whatsoever.
