My brother is looking for a multitool or knife in the $40 range for Xmas. I'm overwhelmed with the possibilities and will try to get some specifics out of him soon but in the meantime any suggestions in that price range you guys really like?

I would go with the Leatherman Wave. Right now you can find it online for around $40-45. I own three different multi-tools: Leatherman Wave, Leatherman Skeletool and a Gerber Crucial. By far the Wave is my favorite and the best IMO.

If pliers aren't a priority, Swiss Army Knife (SAK) or SAK Alox range. There's loads of versions, one to suit nearly everyone! Alox Farmer is popular here. I've just ordered a Alox Pioneer, which is real pocket friendly along with an Orange handled Alox Classic, to add scissors.

Good Luck, hope your brother enjoys his present!

I agree with the two recommendations above. What will your brother do with the tool? What is the main purpose of him having it?

May I ask, where are Waves being sold at those prices?

I too would like to know as most I see are about $20 more.

As far as what he wants he hasn't elaborated and said and I quote just surprise me with a knife or multi tool.

I spied a leatherman fuse at walmart for 39.99 would this fit the bill more or less? I'm guessing he wants an edc or general purpose multi tool

If it were me I would order a sak with his named engraved on the handle. If he is an outdoorsy guy I would get him a Huntsman or Fieldmaster, depending on which he would prefer, corkscrew or phillips. If he's not real outdoorsy or you think those might be a little thick I would go with a Super Tinker or Climber. It's hard to go wrong with a sak and having his name on the handle makes it more personal. A sak in the pocket is worth two multi-tools at home. My 2 cents.

Actually, a pretty good suggestion. Not everyone has the mind set to carry a full size multi-tool, but SAKs have a universal appeal extending even to the casual user. The Climber is a fine gateway SAK. Not everyone feels the need for a blade, but almost everyone likes SAK scissors. My wife, for example, used her Climber scissor for some time before discovering the other implements could be useful, too. Personalizing is also a good idea because it promotes "bonding," making the SAK more likely to be carried. All this is a relatively inexpensive way of not only presenting a fine gift, but introducing a possible (minor) life altering concept to the recipient. It isn't often you get the opportunity to do that.

+1
A SAK is a great gift, and there is one for every one and there brother out there. Think about what he does during the day and get him one that would be most useful to him.
