XTAR Moon RC2
XTAR sent me this light to review. This light is a little different than the lights I have reviewed recently. I wouldn't consider this an on person EDC light though it would make a great addition to your ButOut bag or GetHome bag. This light is meant to clip to your belt or pocket while walking/hiking/jogging or to be clipped inside your tent while camping. The clip is unique in that it is wavy and the body of the light has ridges on it under the clip to keep in place where you decide to put it. The body comes with a colored shell, ether grey or blue with a white/opaque lens and a micro usb charge port on the side.
It comes in minimalist packaging with a usb charger cord. Five LEDs create a very floody 180* beam pattern in front of the light. It has a single power button on top for activation and mode selection. The activation button is backlit with green to indicate the light is on or that the charge is complete and with red to indicate charging. The UI takes a little getting used to, one press of the button activates the light in low mode (30 lumens), a second click click takes you to high mode (120 lumens), a third click activates medium mode (60 lumens) and a final/fourth click activates moonlight mode (3 lumens). Doubled click from off gets you to strobe mode.
The only complaints I have about the RC2 are the same as other reviewers. The UI could be better, unfortunately there is no mode memory and to turn the light off you have to run through all four regular modes. Another problem I had, which could just be me was that in high mode, while walking with it clipped to my belt when I took a step forward on the side the light was clipped it tilted upward ever so slightly making the top of the lens viewable and shining the light in my eyes if I was looking down. It didn't happen very often but I noticed it a couple times when the dog went to explore something. I didn't notice this problem in other modes. I was able to mitigate the problem on high thanks to the wavy clip and body ridges, I clipped the light a little higher on my belt which caused it to naturally lean forward a little. This light would make a great back up light or camping light. It would also be great for when the power goes out and you need to light an entire from or maybe just your kids room because the night light is out of commission.
Benchmade 551 from about six feet away on low.
Benchmade 551 from about six feet away on high.
Benchmade 551 from about six feet away on medium.
Benchmade 551 from about three feet away on moonlight.
