Remember all the concerns as 1999 ended, and the great unknown of 2000 began?

How, in the intervening period, has your mindset, experience and preparation changed?

I did not know what to expect because my business is not computers, but, protecting my family is my highest priority. Therefore it started me to learn about being self sufficient. I have enjoyed the serious hobby ever since. It has also provided great Dad/Kid time together.

Well for one thing, I finally used up all my cans of propane. :o

Seriously though, nothing changed for me.

A perfect example of 'When life hands you lemons, make a Tom Collins'!

There were lots of natural and man-made disasters in the last decade.
I think Hurricane Katrina taught everyone never to rely on the goverment to save you, feed you, or shelter you in case of disaster. Richest nation on earth and you are on your own. Be at least a little prepared.

"What it changed for me" is my once relished annual visits to Lehman's Hardware to stock up on Aladin Lamp wicks and mantles, kerosen lamp wicks, lamp chimnies, strike-anywhere matches, gaskets/cement for the Jotul....

Just prior to "Y2K," Lehman's "Non-Electric" Hardware Store got very popular and though I don't begrudge them the boost in sales, it's now like an amusement park more than the once quaint labrynth of mismatched and coupled buildings. Just ain't the same.

Still great folks to do business with but I do it remotely now and don't have the trip to get excited about anymore.

Hey Doc,

You right. When handed lemons, make lemon aid and sometimes a good 18 year old Scotch.

The Y2K issue was huge for me, as our company had heavy reliance on outdated servers.
It caused me to miss spending the turn of the century with my wife .....worst thing I ever
did in my life. I no longer work for that company, and am no longer in that industry.
Over the time since then, I've altered my world view 180 degrees. I've become more
aware of the simple things in life, more reliant on myself, and less reliant on and less
enamored with technological items.
In the end, I think that by walking away from the computer industry, I've realized
that technology is not the end all, be all that most people make it out to be.
Walking away has allowed me to be more open up to the endless offerings that the world has to offer.
