After years of accumulating various knives, I decided to buy my first custom. I wanted a knife that I could use, and not something that I would just look at. I also set my price at $200-$250 but I certainly exceeded it but not by much.

So what maker would I start with? I looked on this forum for about a month thinking whom, would I pick to be my first Custom maker. I like Tactical ( but find the Kydex style sheaths ugly ,cold) and I like traditional hunter (I like leather sheaths) I really found the decision hard. So, I basically narrowed it down to
1. Trace Rinaldi 2. Geno Denning 3. Gene Ingram

To make a long story short I finally found a Geno Denning, Big Boy:
ATS-34, with Green Micarta and red spacer material. I purchased it from Les Robertson, great service.

The Knife is sweet period… I have never had a mirror finished blade, I'm trying to bring myself to use it(one of my requirements) The polish work completely covers the blade, guard(bolster), tapered tang, and scale rivets. The Green micarta scales are also polished. The blade grinds are fantastic, perfectly even with just a very fine cutting edge. The blade is about 4.5 inches long with an OAL of 9.5 inches. The blade also has "Denning 2002" etched on it along with a serial # 0105 on the underside of the tang.

The handle fits perfectly in my med sized hand. The scales fill my palm swell as if it were made for me. In addition, the knife tends to balance at or about the guard.
The fit and finish is better than any CNC or production machine ever thought it could be. There is no comparison!

The Sheath is also nice. It is formed just right to the shape of the Big Boy and has a classic brown tan color with "caveman Engineering" stamped on the outside. It rides perfect on my hip; it does not hang or dangle like others.

I will eventually get around to using it but for right now, I am content with just carrying (yeah right)

To quote another famous Caveman! "Yabba Dabba DOO"! I really like my Geno Denning Big Boy!

Look out Trace, Gene you are on my list.

Nice knife and a good choice. I have one in Stag and it is sweet. I'm sure you will enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

Over time, I have come to prefer the bead blast Micarta over polished Micarta for the better grip when my hands are oily or sweaty. That is a personal preference learned after much experience with good custom knives.

You may not realize it know but, good knives are like drugs to many people - "I'll just try one and walk away". When you're ready for Knife'aholics Anonymous, let us know :D
