When I was a kid I owned a slip joint or two but until just this week had forgotten all about them in lieu of more modern knives.

Now I'm the proud owner of a handful of slip-joints with more on the way

Northfield - Dogleg Jack with Burnt Stag
GEC - Barlow EZ open with Zebrawood
Tidioute - Executive Melon Whittler with Ebony Wood
Tidioute - Courthouse Whittler with Ebony Wood
Case - Swayback Jack with Chestnut Bone and CV blade

I have large hands so the Swayback and Barlow feel tiny in my grasp. I guess that means a Peanut is out of the question. I love the EZ Open Barlow though, is there such a thing as a larger size?

I have an S&M - Ebony "Heritage" Jack on order and I'd like to find a nice Sodbuster or Backpocket model to add to my lineup.

I think the Executive Melon Whittler is going to sit in the tube for a while. I much prefer the Courthouse over it.

Now I just have to decide which one to stick in my pocket first. :D

Not yet, but many of us are looking forward to it from GEC.

That's a fine group of knives you've got. Not a cull in the bunch. It's a slippery slope from here... ;):D

To go from none to those five in a week is something.

I'm guessing you're the guy who would jump in the pond head first to see if it was frozen!

Welcome to Old School.

you got some nice taste! I personally love that exec. melon whittler, ill store it nice and safe for you!

Now time to start on the patina!

Yup. We got you. But, that is a fine group of knives for a starter. I'd say give those smaller knives some pocket time and get used to them a bit. I'm betting you'll get used to them real fast. Welcome to the Traditionals forum; the water's fine - in fact, you might not want to get out....

That's a heck of a start right there! I guess you've already discovered how addictive it can be.;)

Keep an eye out for the 2011 Traditional Forum Knife order thread in the near future. It's going to be made by GEC. Here is the last poll where a cap lifter/screwdriver was picked instead of a secondary blade. The other specs of the knife are listed in Campbell's first post.

Alternatively, you can find larger vintage ones. To my knowledge there are no other current production EO knives being made.

Great start!! Not exactly an EO Barlow but someone here had modified a GEC #73 or #23 (I forget) with an EO notch. Just a thought;)

So are all Barlows pretty much a standard 3" knife? I like the shape of my EZ Open I have and wouldn't mind one without the EZ open function, but I'd prefer it a little longer... closer to the 4" mark.

Many makers offer large Daddy, or Grand Daddy Barlows 4" or Larger. This was a very popular pattern in the past. Many still make them.

Many BF specialists can direct you.

Excellent Barlows:

Queen Dan Burke Small Barlow. A beautiful small knife perfectly executed every time. Main blade is perfectly centered. Highly recommened on BF.
Queen Dan Burke Daddy Barlow 4"+. Queen Quality Control is Randomly Spotty. My blade is not centered, it lays on the liner.

AGR offers both sizes. Offerings change. AGR stands rock solid behind his Quality Control on anything with his name on it. It is also possible that a QDB Daddy friom AGR will be centered, especially if you ask when ordering. All AGR knives are not from China. I have many excellent AGRs (Branded or Stamped) from Cattagaurus, Queen, Camillus, and other American Makers stamped and shipped by AGR. I have never had a bad knife with the AGR stamp.

Case, Camillus (old USA) and others all offer Large Barlows. Case QC is Spotty. I only buy Case from BF Forum Exchange Members. They will not sell you a bad knife.

This S&M File & Wire Daddy Barlow is the nicest of the large ones I've found. Can still be found for around a C-note.

Some in-hand pics, as well. The knife is 4-7/8" long closed.

Great start! You have already surpassed my collection and I have been in these parts for a couple years heh. Any of your new knives would make a great life long companion. Welcome to the addiction

Excellent opener, couldn't have chosen better myself-all the patterns very different and all very desirable.

WELL DONE!

What's next on the menu??

Sodbuster or BackPocket style. Something I can take out in the garden and drop in the dirt a time or two. Trying to decide between Case (and having blade reprofiled), Queen CC, Eye, etc... Perhaps I'll pick up two and gift the one I like least :)

A larger EZ Open Barlow would be nice... I'll have to dig some more on that one though. I think the 4.75" Daddy Barlows are a smidge larger than I'd like, but the 3"ers are too small.

Good idea.

If you've a large hand, try a CASE Large Stockman in cv or a GEC Cattle Knife/Cuban.

Rough Rider do a Large Liner lock Sodbuster that's good and acceptable too.

I really like your Northfield dogleg jack. I have a Case sbj also and it's a really fine knife.

Yep, you've got it bad. I'm in the same boat as you, only owned modern folders for years but now I find it hard to pocket one of my spyderco's over this little peanut.

Big hands or not, you've got nothing to loose trying the peanut. I recommend the Chestnut bone CV version, it's an excellent knife for the money.
