In less than a month or so y'all have turned me into a ESEE (& Becker) lovin' gear whore! I've created a bob, purchased too many knives, ESEE swag (waiting on my vest today), & various other implements. Thanks to my friend and fellow BF member for helping me to spend money by turning me onto this forum and your fantastic products.

I lurked for a bit then created an account and just started posting so let me formally introduce myself:

Live outside Austin, TX...stay home with my kid and work evenings, enjoy killin' my own meat and working on my 97 powerstroke. I'm considering the spring camp out but my weekend work schedule kills a lot of plans. I'll be going back to work full time after almost 3yrs at home with the kid in the fall. I'm looking forward to the additional income (more to buy knives with :D) but I'll miss the boy. I'm an Entomologist by education so if you ever have any bug questions fire away.

Side note...my goliath bird eating tarantula Debbie Hairy passed recently causing the mouse population at petco to rejoice.

Theraphosa blondi is the genus species..so the name is kind of an inside joke but it's funny even if you don't get the species reference. Gotta give the wife credit for that one, she's an entomologist as well.

Welcome aboard. Looks like you a nice collection going there. That was one fine looking arachnid. Sorry about her passing. You should buy another knife in her memory.

Yeah, a Spyderco. See what I did there? :D

Yes, welcome aboard. There are plenty of bad habits to be picked up within the Pack. The Beckerheads are also an unsavory group to spend time with. You'll definitely go through some cabbage hanging around these two groups.(God forbid you get involved with Busse & Co., you'll be hitchhiking to that new job!!:D)

Hey, nice spider. Sorry about it passing, will it be hard to replace? How many mice did it consume in a week?

I'm in the same boat ordered 2 junglas's at the beginning of the and still waiting for those, but my Izula II w/kit survival + navigational cards came today.

just need to order a ESEE-4SMB-DT. :)

I feel your pain - bought 4 ESEE's in the last 3 months. Also, sorry about the spider - I am a veterinarian, do quite a bit of exotics, and have quite a few tortoises of my own. My favorite died recently - not the impact of losing my dog, but I got her in sad shape, spent a lot of time fixing her up and had her for 12 years. Still sucks, kinda like losing your spider, but what are you gonna do. This may sound strange, but let me know about the terrarium you had set up for your goliath. Pics would be cool too. Spent some time at zoos and in general are interested in terrarium set ups and husbandry in general of reptiles and arachnids.

If you need to save money, head over to the Busse subforums...or betteryet join arfcom...
Wait no.
Those are both terrible ideas.
Anyway
Welcome.
Have some more coolaid. It doesnt slow the bleeding (of your wallet), but it sure feels good!

I certainly didn't cry over her but she was a big mean bitch and cool to watch. She stuck one of here fangs right through the top of a mouse skull once and that was just frickin' sick (in a good way)! She only consumed about one mouse a month, but we'd supplement her with hissing cockroaches, crickets etc. The mice we fed were live so it was always interesting at feeding time. Another could be had from the local specialty pet store depending on availability. Spiderlings can be had pretty cheap but they take FOREVER to raise to their adult size.

Bluefivespot: nothing too fancy on the terrarium setup. Read a lot about how sensitive they could be to conditions (temp, moisture, etc) but we never had any problems. used the coconut husk substrate, no heater or lamp, and just misted it whenever she started to hover over the water dish. That was always our indicator that the humidity levels were getting too low. We had her for around 8 years and she was an adult when purchased so there's no telling how old she actually was. I believe they can live 20yrs or so for that species.

KFG: I really like some of the Busse stuff but my pockets certainly aren't that deep and my one AR is gonna have to tide me over a little longer until I can do a build once my funds increase again. I have been avoiding all of the really expensive forums as well as my diesel sites for monetary reasons!
