First, many thanks to Yangdu for offering the pieces on special, and for the incredibly fast service.
I bought the 18 inch Gelbu Special by Sher (2nd form left) and the 16.5 inch horn-handled Chiruwa Ang Khola by Bura next to it; photo courtesy of Yangdu's 5-24 ad.
I compared both to the BAS by Sher that I got a couple weeks ago, and have the following conclusions:
The 18" Gelbu is a sweet-handling knife, hands-down! Of the three, I believe it might be my favorite, but I can see that it's not going to be as an efficient chopper as the BAS or the AK. But the handling is there, very evident when I did a couple of knife katas last evening.
Next as a close second would be the BAS, very close in style and weight to the AK, just a bit shorter and lighter. Nice overall khukri.
Last, the Chiruwa AK only because of the handle. I've determined that I don't care for the Chiruwa style of handle; the full-style handle of the others is much more ergonomic and to my liking. I DO like the balance and feel of the 16.5" AK, but the Chiruwa handle is a bit of a letdown. A 16.5" Ak with a full handle would be the berries. I much emphasize that there is NOTHING wrong with the AK, the "problem" is me and my preference.
Question: What's the basics on the "closed" cho of the Gelbu vs. the open cho of the others? I read the FAQ, but it wasn't specific on open vs. closed styles.
