Curious how people would rate the new 'Green Beret Knife' against the 'Busse Steel Heart'.

I do not own either, so I cannot comment personally.

Cordially,

JB

The knives have a really different feel in hand.

If I were in a non-combat survival situation, the Busse.

Combat (Armed conflict), the CRK Green Beret knife.

Why? Balance, blade geometery, overall utility of the design.

Apples and Oranges -

Busse creates knives very much akin to the Y-Knife in terms of design and manufacture capabilities. The "Heart", however, is different catagory of knife than the Y-K. Don't believe you can compare them.

Busse once made me a bowie that met the criteria for such a knife as outlined in my book "Battle Blades". Beautiful bit of work and it went on to see service in Thailand and the Balkans with a close friend of mine. He swears by it. There's a very unique Busse field knife here with one of the lads and he, too, swears by it for all things field/combat related.

Neither of these two Busses are "Hearts".

You have 3 capable makers involved with the "Heart"/Y-K. Determine your needs, abilities with a knife, financial situation, and then choose what is BEST for you;)

Speaking of comparing the Yarborough to other knives, I understand that it "beat" 100 other knives to be chosen as the "offical knife of the special forces"...where can one see a list of the other 99 knives???

Thanks,
RL

I don't think there was a knife competition. The knife was designed at the request of the SOCOM community as a presentation knife for graduates of the Special Forces course. I think you can find the story in the Chris Reeves knives forum.

That is my understanding as well...

All you're likely to get from these posts is speculation.
LMAO, the rumor mill's already started about this huge competition the knife had to win, and it's getting compared to other knives by people who have probably never even seen one:rolleyes:
Nothing new, happens all the time around here. Just take everything you read with a grain of salt.

Excuse me but in the latest issue of Tactical Knives they do a review of the Yarborough and they specifically state that the knife beat out 100 others in a competition (I don't have the mag here to quote it as I'm away from home)...can someoneplease post the quote??

I have definitely seen a Yarborough in person...at the NY show...in fact, I even saw a signed copy :)

I'm giving that Yarborouh serious consideration. I haven't handled either the Busse or the Yarborough, but so far, the Yarborough's looks win my heart. And it looks like it handles really well.

Yeah just like every gun in a magazine review shoots 1.5" groups offhand at 25 yards. ;)
I say everybody on BF write to Tactical Knives and ask for the list of 100 other knives.

Two weeks or so ago myself and Bill Harsey exchanged several emails re: the Y-Knife.

Bill mentioned a number of interesting things about the knife but never once offered there was any form of "competition" re: its adoption.

IF the magazine (Tactical Knives) offered there was such a competition then it should have outlined the criteria / performance requirements of those 101 knives alleged to have been involved. And both Harsey and/or Chris Reeve could have provided this information for the article - or the PAOs at either USASFC/JFKCEN or USSOCOM (USASFC is at Bragg and is the appropriate Command - although it could as likely be JFKCEN as the knife is supposed to be presented to each graduate of the "Q" course and JFKCEN runs the program - USSOCOM handles all of US SOF and is located in Tampa, Florida).

Such information is hardly classified and if Harsey/Reeve were uncomfortable with such information (if the rumor is true) then TK should have and could have gotten a PAO press release.

Hmmmm...I really wish that I had access to the TK article...either I misinterpreted the article or the article is mistaken...I found this quote on the Chris Reeve forum

"It never was authorized," Gresham said. "Later, we had what we called a SOG knife in Vietnam. General Brown got in contact with me and said he wanted to do something for General Yarborough. So, he called me and told me how he went to over 100 different manufacturers to find a knife that would be ideal."

Well, that's a horse of a different color.

Chris' site would be accurate...perhaps TK misguided or misunderstood.

In any event checking out Chris' website on this is clearly best immediate solution.

Nice work ;)

I cant think of 50 manufacturers off the top of my head, and talking to several well known manufaturers not one of them said they were contacted about a SF knife. Of course this may have been years in the making. Im just speculating however.......

I believe that Cliff Stamp broke it down concerning these two knives on 10-10-02. I don't know how to link threads, but if someone has the inclination it can be found in a thread titled "Green Beret Knife" started by a forumite by the name of Bionic Boner over in the CRK forum.

Hi Greg,

Not that I want to beat a dead horse (but I don't appreciate my posts being laughed at and referred to as "rumour mill"), but I actually went down to a magazine store today to look at TK (my mag is at home, 600km away)...there is a SECTION of the article entitle 100 Knives Tested and the 1st paragraph of the section re-iterates the notion that 100 knives were submitted and tested...

The quote that I posted earlier came from the Chris Reeve forum here on BF :)
