Yard/Garden Knife?

I have been thinking of a larger knife to clear out some weeds from time to time instead using the weedeater. Not sure I want to get a scythe as that is a specialized use. Is there some knife that would work well for "bush whacking?" Most of the machetes I have seen are bigger than I would like, but perhaps a small one might work. Or is there an alternative to a machete?

Thanks,

Just use the weedwhacker. If you absolutely must blaze a trail through your back yard, I'd suggest a short tramontina machete. A long one works better, but you wanted a shorter suggestion. Machetes are fast, light, and cheap. They were invented to hack through vegetation with minimal fatigue....and that's what you're looking for, so there ya go. You're welcome.

When I was a kid, we had a grass whip that I liked to pretend was a scythe. I don't know where it came from... I think it might have been in the house when we moved in. Anyhow, it did the job in the far reaches of the back yard that was kind of rocky and couldn't really be mowed easily with the power mower, and thus was usually overgrown and kind of wild.

Occasionally I see one at a garden center that's pretty similar. They aren't very expensive. You'll probably need to give it a good sharpening before use.

I have one of these from a garage sale ($5), a long-handled "grass hook":

The handle is just a little short for me at 5'9" with my wing-span, but with a sharp blade you just walk along and swing at the base of weeds, etc. without having to bend over. Works very well

If you yard sale or flea market there's nothing like a big ole' kitchen knife on your belt to use, abuse, dig with, whatever, while doing yard work. A wooden or cardboard sheath is easy. It could give you an idea of what you need anyway.

Cold steel's new lawn and garden machete seems to fit the bill...and it is also the only product of their's that I've ever seen them NOT put a tactical spin on!

However, if you want an alternative to a machete, a Mora #333 is GREAT for that sort of work.

If you want a machete type blade, I'd look at the ones that have about a 12" blade. Personally, I wouldn't use one for cutting grass or low vegetation. Nor would I use a BK-9 or similar knife for such a purpose unless it is all I have.

Weed wacker (long handled scythe) is what I would choose. They don't cost much and work well. Your back will appreciate your choice. Or you can mount a blade on a weed eater.

I use my convexed Ontario RTAK 2 to chop down the weeds and brush behind the fence that my weedwacker can't get. Works fantastic. I can cut down 1-2" limbs with a wack or two.
