Here's the haul for today, all 5 bucks each :D. The orange one on the right is a Sandvik the rest are unmarked. The little hatchet is a marked Brade's Criterion with a strange number mark 3l2 (Three vertical slash two). It's a tiny head, I think what they call a hunters hatchet. Anyone know anything about this British tool maker and what the 3l2 could mean (1 1/2 pounds???) It's a curvy little head, lots of hump. Check the
2nd pic down http://oldschooltools.co.uk/index.php?p=1_13_Axes-Hatchets-Drawknives
Mine is smaller so would likely be the number one hunters hatchet. Check out the profile in their picture.

Best regards

Robin

Wow, nice haul. I especially like the one on the far right.
I never find old tools at garage sales anymore...just baby clothes and outdated electronics. :D

Nice haul there pipeman! Isn't that 'Brades' upside down?

I missing out on a nice old (1942) Brades awhile back on the bay.
It was the first and only one that I have ever seen like it. I'm still mad that I didn't get it. Their suppose to be fine axes even it they were made by the Brits :p

Hey Bearman. This little thing has serious big axe shape, a really neat little hatchet. Yup it's hung upside down, It's previous owner was braindead.:o

What a score! I like the big brute in the middle and the one at the upper left. They look like efficient cutters.

I love those little Sandviks - a fine axe.

The axe goes on easier when you hang it upside down.

I inherited a Brades axe from my Grandad. It is marked 2 3/4LBS the other side has BRADES 368 or 668 the first digit is worn.
I use it one or two handed. It's my go to axe for firewood and kindling this time o' year.

Nice haul there Robin! I got a Collins axe head for $2 and a Plumb hatchet with sheath for $5 today. I'll try and get up pictures soon. The best day I have had in a long while.

What a great score. Most of those will clean up nicely with a course wire cup brush on an angle grinder or a drill.

Take this with a grain of salt 'cause it's just through the grapevine. Some folks would wear the toe down and then hang 'em upside down to let the wear on the heel catch up to the toe.

It seems plausible. Surely anyone can see when an axe is hung upside down. And toes do tend to wear down faster than heels.

I have a Brades Criterion 312. I'm pretty sure it is a model number, not a weight.
The brand on mine is different to yours: It much closer to the cutting edge, & contained within an oval. The letters of "brades" swell in the centre to fit the oval, ie. the a & d are larger than the b & s. I always thought the 1 in the 312 was a little larger for the same reason.
If it was meant to mean "3 over 2", I think they would have slanted the 1.

Mine is a bueatifully shaped little head, I love the look of it.

Thanks for the info, I thought it might be a model # but the 1 on mine looks like a stroke rather than a numeral. I'm going to post it on British blades forum and see if anyone has a history of the company or knows the marks they used. I emailed a guy who sells british axes but he didn't know anything ;-(( It IS a beautifully shaped little head. Have you weighed your head? I'm figuring less than a pound on mine and it seems pretty full. I'll post any info I find on Brades in this thread.

Thanks again

Best regards

Robin

with the handle, which could be original, it weighs 675 grams. My converter says 1 pnd 7 ounces.
I guess the head weighs a pound.
