Hi All,

I posted this in the Bernard levine section but it may get more interest here. This is my first time posting so bear with me if I am in the wrong section.
I recently inherited a collection of knives and was looking to get some information on each one.

I believe this is a Yatagan but I am very limited in my knowledge. Any help would be appreciated (date, location, maker, inscription translation, value, etc).

Thank you all in advance!
Matt

See the posted guidelines regarding value. Selling is limited to the classifieds and a paid subscription.

It appears very similar to one I have. I would think northern Turkey, early 19th century but I don't know Farsi. You might try at the vikingsword.com boards, as they know ethnographic arms very well. The cartouche may point to a more specific region and it may even be Balkan, very near the same territories of northern Turkey.

GC,
Thanks for the info. I purchased a gold membership but forgot to update that on my profile. Would you have any idea on the value of it?
Thanks,
Matt

Watch traffic on Ebay for yataghan and look at sold items. There is a seller, Oriental-Arms that might give you an idea of retail pricing.

Do nothing to the blade except wiping with some light oil. It appears to be low resolution wootz. Can't really make out a whole lot in those pictures. Better light and overall pictures of four sides of the hilt. The grip may well be walrus ivory or camel bone.

Cheers
