At the South Florida Khukuri Konvention I had mentioned to our favorite uncle that I might be interested in trading a beautiful wood handled Ganga Ram (Bura) for something which was more...well...me.
Don't get me wrong, the Ganga Ram was/is a great khukuri, but a bit large for my tastes which run more to the martial/utility/"jack of all trades" type khukuris. (I think a look at my small collection of khukuris will reveal such a pattern... BAS, WWII's, Gelbu Special, Kumar Kobra and the wicked small Sirupatis.)
Which brings us to the subject at hand. What to replace the GRS with?
In the end it was a no-brainer. What better than a khukuri designed by my good friend Yvsa to be made by rising star Durba? A few emails back and forth with Uncle Bill, a trip to the post office and the die was cast.
Here is the result:
All I can say is that this is one exceptional khukuri. It feels alive in my hand and fits it as though Durba took measurements.
The weight and balance is just right for my size (5'10"/185 lbs).
The OAL is 17", the spine comes in at just under 7/16" thick.
The handles feature the Nepali Hill Walnut I have become so fond of.
The scabbard, by the Sarki With No Name has a beautiul bird tooled into the leather, and "Nepal" at the throat. Great job.
(By the way, Uncle, do you know what the bird represented is?)
The tools speak for themselves. While not the awesome kit designed by Yvsa, nonetheless they show the creativity of Durba and I am very pleased with them.
All in all I couldn't be more pleased.
Many thanks to Yvsa for designing such a well thought out khukuri, to Durba for executing it so well, and to Uncle Bill for letting me find a khukuri that was....well....more me.
