Some of you may know that I possess the one and only Silent Knight prototype. I am not the original owner, and it did come to me used. My problem (well, one of many depending on who you talk to ;) ) is that I have been debating whether or not to use it. Obviously, new or used is not my concern. Rather, I do not want to inadvertantly damage it. What would YOU do if you were me--use it or keep it in a safe? Would you depend on it in a survival situation?

You should know that it is A2 and, AFAIK, Jerry is the only person who has ever sharpened this knife. Pics are here to help you decide since I can't seem to even do that. :)

What would I do? Sell it and buy a few knives I wouldn't feel bad about using. I'm not a collector though.

I'm with 230 here, honestly - it's not a design that screams "user" to me, and I'd rather sell it and use the money to buy a couple more utilitarian designs that would actually serve a practical use.

I can't vote. :(

I have the same quandry with the Hood artical BM. :o

I would love to go out and wack that thing silly...
see what that convexed, asymmetrical edge is like...
But I would hate to damage it. That would be a tragedy in my mind.

Good poll!

Is that BM INFI? IIRC, it has a higher Rockwell hardness than the standard SHBMs, so I guess I could see where there might be a reluctance to navigate mostly unchartered territory.

I'd keep it if you feel that is is a piece you'll want later on down the road or to pass on to someone special. If you are tempted to use it, I'd sell it and buy a few more practical users. But that is just MHO. She looks like a beast.

They are all INFI... But the Rc on the actual test use/article photos that has the convex asym is 60 Rc.

It's the other that he had lightened up and handled and the WASP that have the higher Rc of 62.

Oh... and I've used the WASP a couple of times. :)

For me I guess I would look at two options. The first would be having Jerry give it a beauty treatment and then putting in the safe. My guess that this might actually reduce its value though so it may not be the best option.

The second option would be to ask Jerry to sign an authenticity or history of the design type letter and have a custom display case made for it. I would then display it as a work of art.

Its used anyway, you are not going to break it.Chances are it will look the same with years of you using it.So use it.

I never new you had that, or you might not have it still:D

DOes it say proto on it?

I love the original SK:thumbup:

I vote keep it in the safe, but I thought it was a virgin. If it is not then change my vote to light user.

It does not. The fellow I got it from got it directly from Jerry at a show. According to him, Jerry had it with him so that folks could see what was then available to be ordered. He said that he did not want to order one and wait, but wanted the Proto (apparently the only one in existance at that time) and had to strong-arm Jerry out of it. I suspect he actually offered Jerry some $$$ and/or some single malt scotch and they spoke to Jerry on the buyer's behalf. He then later sold it to me. :) It is slightly thicker than the SKs that were then produced, and AFAIK, the only SK ever to have a stamped logo rather than the way they do it now.

I would use it, you can always send in into the SPA to make it new again. :)

The single biggest advantage to buying used collectable knives is that you can then use them with out altering their value.

For me, that means throwing as well as cutting/chopping.
