Years ago about 1966 or so I bought western l66 hunting knife. Those old knives were first cousins to a case I foolishly traded it.Then it got lost .
I saw one for sale, not a fortune. Well i got it . Overall not to bad . Edge was all there but rough. My grandson has a worksharp and is good with it. He jump on the chance to work it over .
I just got it back and it's razor. That old 1095 was done right . I found a leather sheath very similar to what it came with .I have always liked carbon steel in a belt knife . I have several esse , a hess , a LT wright in d2 a busse ratmandu sr-101 . So I have never been afraid of blade rust. .
So glad I replaced that old western. The first time I believe it was $ 4.50. So don't be afraid of these old knives

Agree.
I had one from '66 until '74, that I got for either Christmas or my birthday. I have no idea what happened to it. Lost during a move?
I bought my last new one in late 1979 or early 1980. I put it in a foot locker that was supposed to be shipped to me when I moved from So. Cal back to East Central Iowa, in 1980. (I should have put it in one of my motorcycle's pannier bags.)

The last one I bought was a "D" (1980) date code I bought at a pawn shoppe, in 2918. I think I paid $15 or $20 for it, with a not original leather sheath.
(It is in a bag of knives that was misplaced when I moved to this Assisted Living, in 2019. 😡)

The Western L66 was the hunting knife in the deer woods of North America for several decades, starting around 1950 - if not earlier. I believe the L66 was the most popular, followed by the F66 "Black Beauty".
I am thinking of getting another L66, even though my hunting days are long over. 😭

My belt/sheath knife of choice this year is a D date code Western 062 two blade folding hunter. Same excellent 1095 blades. The 062 displaced the 110 or Old Timer 7OT I had on my belt every day since 1968. (not the same 110 or 7OT)

Yes, the Western 66 is a great pattern, one of my favorites.

Plus an old Schrade Walden 147, same pattern and size with a larger handle.

I'm glad you were able to find a good one. I would love to see pictures, if you're willing to share. I have a special fondness for old knives that are brought back to fighting shape.

I got the sheath and it is a copy of a original I believe. Not the best but hardly chicken hide . A little light color to my taste but can darken it. It still amazes me how sharp it became. Western was at the top of their at this time . Just like the old case hunting knives were . Don't sell these old carbon steel blade short. Pride can trump modern technology.

I had one of those 66 in the early 80’s when I was around 11 or 12.I’m not sure where I got it from. I might of picked it up from a flee market. It was a great knife. Not sure whatever happened to it. I probably sold it or traded it for something dumb.

Anyhow very nice looking knives y’all have.👍
