Yeller jack knives, the inspiration and result together at last

It was a picture of this very Northfield 66 jack knife in rotten banana bone that inspired me to select the smooth marigold bone for the rehandle of my old Colonial barlow. I even sent links to the pictures here on BF to the fellow doing the work, asking if he could find anything close to the rotten banana bone.

With the arrival of today's package, I now have the knife that inspired the work. So, here they are together, the GEC which was the inspiration, and the Colonial which is the result of that inspiration.

Doug.....

The old Colonial Barlow looks good in a shadow pattern with the yellow handles.....good choice....

Great pic Doug! The autumn scenery in the background is working great with the beautiful yeller handled knives :)

Very kind of you to say Andi. That autumn scenery is actually the result of two things: high winds that blew through as hurricane Sandy passed nearby, and the fact that I have been ill since Sunday and unable to get out and clean the yard.

But, I got to be home when the knives were delivered today!

Doug,
thank you for the pictures :) I have to say, both the inspirational and the inspired knives look great.
As for yeller jack knives...I have to say, when I started spending time on this subforum, the yeller handles looked so weird to my eye. I've always been used to horn, wood, ivory, and yeller handles (both synthetic and dyed bone) were such a new thing.
But with time my eye got used to it, and now I can easily say I really like yeller handles. Both GEC yeller handles (the rotten banana and the Texas rose) look great, and maybe someday I will get one...

Yes, fine woodland setting there Doug, hope none of your trees got blown down?

I've liked that re-handle job you had done on the Barlow, kind of ironic as I have the RB Bone 66 myself and now been brooding about a re-handle job on a battered old knife or two. That Marigold would do nicely, but I haven't ruled out antique ivory micarta either....kind of yellow I suppose. The RB Bone is really unusual and I'm much taken with it.

Regards, Will

hope none of your trees got blown down

Trees are all intact. We lost a several branches, and one limb that was about 6" in diameter, but no damage. We are far enough inland that this one was not severe here. That was not the case with hurricane Fran back in 1996. One neighbor lost over 30 trees in his yard alone.

Doug, Nice knives and great pic's! Nothing better than N.C in the fall... gotta love it!

Thank you Jason.

This is my favorite season. I do enjoy turning off the road and driving down to our house this time of year.

That a a GREAT job with the Colonial. I never liked those knives because of the chintzy handles and bolsters, but they do have great thin, carbon slice-like-a-laser blades. Whoever did this re-handling job ought to buy up and re-handle all the old Colonial Barlows he can find. I'm sure they'd sell.
