I am interested in purchasing a 8OT with yellow handles. It is supposedly new in the box. What is the value range on that knife? Any help is greatly appreciated.

the last price set by Schrade was 30.00 but today it's about 80-100.00

It depends on which time frame the knife is from. I'm not 100% sure, but IIRC they are still making current production (overseas)yellow 8OT'S, and those can probably be bought for about 10 bucks. If it is a current production knife, I would suggest looking for an older one.
An older n.i.b yellow 8OT will not be cheap, but they are worth every penny IMHO. If its going to be a user, look around and find one without a box,and it will save you some money...

The knife I am looking at trying to buy is a n.i.b. As far as how old it is, I don't know, but it is marked "Schrade USA" on the tang. If I do get it, I'm sure I will end up paying more than a knowledgable collector would, because a knowledgable collector would know where to put the cap in his or her bid. At least I can justify the purchase (if I do win it) and say I paid what it is worth and not a penny more, by invoking the old "the value of a knife is the amount of money that someone is willing to pay for it" rule!

The 8OTY is rare, at least quite uncommon. I've tried to pick one up from time to time, but they've gone past my high water mark so far. There is one going on right now on Ebay... out of control from my point of view, but with bidding on knives, I will let others make up their own mind. I have no room to talk when it comes to knife expenses. :D

I might offer the Schrade Open Stock 881Y is the same knife with a different stamp, and can be picked up often for under $40.00 in excellent condition. The Schrade Walden version even has matchstrikers. Just make sure it is a Schrade USA.

The same is true with a 34OTY and the 834Y.

The yellow knives are real pretty too.

I hate to admit it, but I have yet to acquire any "yeller handle" knives. I did however get my first scrim last night. It's an exact match to the one I bought my dad for father's day about 20 yrs ago. I'm pretty excited about that!

Dont think collectors are immune from bidding more that they think a knife is worth. I have and and I know a few others whom have too. I know the feeling "If you gotta have it your gonna get it." There is a mad blindness that can come over most of us sometimes too often.

I still have a few knives to sell but sorry no 8OTY.

:D

Yes # 10 gave me a touch up before anything was posted here .
Glad its over .

I'm a tad like Jamo's Bundy Drop Bear on this one....is this the correct box for this knife....when was this 8OT issued with the bomb shield....and was it a Schrade reminiscence knife of the 881Y..and issued in ordinary 8OT box?....I was not even aware of its existance really....can someone tell me more like which catalog it appeared in and why it was issued with the retro bomb shield....thanks...Hoo Roo

Larry - Both the 8OTY (Frontiersman) and the 34OTY (Plainsman) were single year issues in 1990. I would suppose they were issued in sharp idea boxes, but I do not know for sure. That auction did not have a picture on the end flap to see if it had the name correct. I don't believe they stamped the knife with a Y, and the bomb shield (8OTY) and an oval shield (34OTY) were proper. I believe in both cases with SCHRADE, not OLD TIMER, engraved on shield. Someone have examples of these?

Why not Old Timer Shields? Maybe leftover handles? Also wondering if the genuine 34OTY and 8OTY were supposed to be smooth or sawcut? The 881Y and 834Y were both smooth. The one in that recent auction was smooth. My thinking is we've all seen 8OT blades put on a variety of knives.

You can see a rough illustration of these in the 1990 Short Line Catalog. Interestingly enough, the 106OT, 2250T, 36OT and 44OT were new offerings in 1990 too.

Hey UL , As you know most things confuse me . So what about the tang 8OT there is no Y tang . Is it supposed to have one ? Hope you didn't mind me posting a picture of you after a Square Bear Black Label or is it SBBL ?

I just scooped a real good deal on the 1990 vintage 34OTY "Plainsman" to compliment my sterling 34OT. I don't have an old-school 34OT yet but it will complete the trio. I will post some detailed scans when I get it. The stamp is "Schrade" over "USA 34OT". I don't see these all that often so I was pleasantly surprised when there wasn't a bidding frenzy lol It's smooth not saw-cut and does indeed say "Schrade" on the oval shield.

Looks like a great knife and a fantastic price.
The seller screwed himself pretty bad with the "340 T" nonsense. Good catch for you!
