Yellow spots in Burgundy Micarta

I'm working on my second knife and I'm using burgundy linen micarta for the scales. I noticed while shaping the handle that I'm getting some sizeable splotches of yellow in the micarta. I know that there will be some color variation particulary with the linen micarta, but is this normal? Could I be getting the micarta too hot? I'm dunking the knife pretty regularly but I suppose it could have gotten hot. Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like you are getting it too hot. Try using fresh belts so that you do not create a lot of heat. Ilike to do all of my rough shaping with course belts then do the rest by hand. That is what works for me.

Been there, Done that, Bobby and Matt are right. New belts and slow it down. Dont overheat the rivets or pins either, that will leave a burnt ring around them.

Now, before you get down on yourself about this Sam, consider how everyone who has posted here learned what they know. Me too! :)

Thanks for the help guys. I was able to get the yellow out by hand sanding and only had to get the scales a tad thinner than what i had planned. No way to slow down my grinder so I will be sure next time to use a fresh belt and ease up on the pressure. So far I havent made the same mistakes I made on my first one but I keep finding new ways to mess up. Thanks again. :)

Wow, I thought I was the only person this happened too. After having my Micarta smoke on the grinder, I noticed that something was wrong with it. It looked like it had small pox or something. I think I have the burn ring around the pins too from when the pins overheated.

I know what you mean! I have finished 4 knives from scratch now and with each knife I learned a brand new set of 25 mistakes!
