Well the eagle has landed and as soon as I opened the box, I took it down to chop some stuff.

As my first full sized Becker, I must say I am impressed with the feel of it. The grivory seems plenty grippy and the handle is comfortable.
I must say the the retention on the plastic insert didn't impress me too much, but it is definitely well stitched and constructed, and with the two snaps, it isn't going anywhere.
However, when I am in the middle of using it and resheath, I don't want to have to worry about snapping the retention straps all the time.
Do y'all think it'd be possible to replace the plastic insert with a kydex one or maybe just add on to the plastic?
This is going to make one hell of a farm tool, and by the end of the summer, you folks are going to be sick and tired of hearing about my machax.:D

Thanks to Moose for the generous giveaway, and for including a couple patches with the box. Wasn't expecting that.

Remove the insert, boil water, dip insert briefly in water and press together until it cools. If the new sheaths are anything like the old ones, you might have to locate the little plastic tabs on the sides of the insert that are stitched into the sheath and either cut them, rip them or cut and re-glue the seam. Little bit of work but it should create enough tension to keep the blade from rattling around too much.

Stuff some dryer lint down the insert, it elimimates rattle and if you stuff enough lint in the insert, you should be able to hold it upside down without the knife falling out.
Congratz on the machax!

-orangish ducktape

I bypassed the snaps and made a shock cord loop through the holes in the sheath up near the pommel. Pull it up and over the pommel and seems to work pretty good. Had to do it because I fattened the handles on my BK4 so the snaps didn't work anymore.

I got a question CBWoods67! Because that bit of woods in your pic is similar to what I face but add stupid tall invasive grass clumps - how do you think the machax performs in that? I always feel undergunned using a machete, which usually choke when the thick grass bunch gets over 6" diameter. Add in hidden rocks too (argh). I just want to be able to hack through it all top to bottom without changing tools constantly. Can't wait till my machax gets here!

Thanks for the suggestions about the sheath, guys. What bothers me most is that if I hold onto the handle and give it a couple shakes and it just falls out. It isn't a big deal, I guess because the sheaths isn't really going to shake itself.
Maybe I'll just rig up a baldric style sheath out of zip ties and duct tape and run around the woods with some camo face paint on. Yeah, that sounds like a definite possibility.

Haze240, did you change colors overnight? You look good in gold.

We mostly have ornamental grasses, and I already cut down down the biggest clump.
However, I did do some looking. and this is what I found.
Mostly reeds at this point.

Found a little clump of other grass. It was maybe 2 feet tall.

The machax will definitely get the job done, but keep in mind that it isn't a very long blade. I don't know if the grass will cut you over there, but due to the lack of reach, I definitely wouldn't want to use it as a grass exclusive tool. But as you can see from the pictures, it has the heft to get through it.

thanks for the extra pics. pic 3 of the clump is close, bright green now from all the rains. the grass will be like that up to overhead, super thick with trees here and there. invasive weed taking over, california or african grass depends who you ask. when mature the stalks have fiberglass like needles / spines which go right through gloves. a PITA.

understood about length of blade I guess I'll have to use at least 2 tools, long blade to make room, machax/similiar to cut down the base, and later shovel to rip the hunk out of the ground and fell trees. about what I'm doing now, it's a constant battle against those weeds. destroyed my new condor machete yesterday. the tip got bent, the edge is all chewed up from hitting stumps and rocks. it wasn't sharp enough to begin with but used it fresh out of the box.

"The grivory seems plenty grippy"?? That sounds about as unlikely a grouping of words as "Clint Eastwood just came out of the closet".

grivory can be grippy....not factory...but a lil stippling and sanding, makes it feel like a new beast. JMHO

Clint Eastwood on the other hand, can never be ''in the closet''.

I actually prefer my stippled grivory for chopping tasks over micarta or wood. That knife ain't going nowhere if it's stippled. Smooth grivory, OTOH, es muy peligroso for chopping.

Well it isn't like I have pine tar on my hands, but I won't have any trouble holding on to it. Maybe I'm just used to using lesser quality handles that necessitate a tighter grip.
Or maybe Clint Eastwood is actually a homo...

I think the stock grivory is plenty grippy also. Maybe we don't "use" as much lotion as some people.

Another groin massage for the mods\ Ethan ? The grivory is modded or replaced often because it's as slippery as goose snot after working the knife hard.

hey cbwoods67 check out this video. great idea using a support stick, though I think using the machax like this could risk the leg  I ordered an Ontario USGI and a Tramontina bundle still in search of my ultimate. maybe it's not out there in a single tool but at least will have something instead of nothing. since cars don't come with leaf springs anymore :p

just realized the huge ad banner so removed the video. anyways this guy used a branch and chopped a hook on the end so he could reach out and grab with that, then slice. useful for clearing away the debris etc. adds distance, handy if snakes in the area too. cool jungle craft tip. he was swinging horizontally very low to the ground and clearing pretty quick, but why I mentioned the leg. vid shows him working on an incline, NBD, but what I'm up against is the same plus sometimes rocks that settled, hidden, at the clump stump. no short cuts for me I guess.

is like this. sometimes have to use a harness for safety close to the edge as it's a long way down.
still looking forward to the machax! will definitely find a use for it one way or another. enjoy yours!

I'm not here to argue or fight. I prefer stock grivory. We all have different opinions of what works best.

Why a beckerhead would insult the mods and Ethan like this is beyond me. Especially over such a small matter.

I'm sure there are plenty of websites out there where you can continue your desire to discuss men massaging other mens groins.

You guys gotta stop posting pics of the JAB Potbelly. My curiousity on this knife was piqued again the other day, weird handles or not. Something about a 1/4" thick, deeply hollow ground blade that has the same steel specs as a Becker that says "BUY ME...AND LETS GO CHOP SOME S*** UP!!!"

I've been wondering what it would look like stripped, polished and with a set of black handles that come with the Zombie knives....It sort of reminds me of a knife I wanted a long time ago that I never could afford at the time. I believe it was called the Blackjack Anaconda II. I used to stare at it longingly in a US Cav catalog.
