I know that daggers are illegal in NY City and State. However, is a double edge machete or machete like (i.e Gladius, Smatchet, etc.) considered or looked at as a dagger? I am talking one for chopping and trail work in the woods.

Thanks!

"Dagger" is mentioned in 265.01 but never actually defined. It should be noted that this part of 265.01 says it is illegal to possess a dagger "with intent to use the same unlawfully against another." My best understanding is that a true, combat designed dagger is simply presumed by the legal system to be carried with such intent. A machete-like implement found in a context suggesting it is used strictly for use as a woodland tool I think would fall outside this definition. Mind, if it is a gladius or smatchet, a cop may have a hard time believing they are intended for tool use considering historically they were used for combat.

That's true about the smatchet part, as I believe they are still used for this purpose but I can't say for sure. The double bladed machete makes a great woods tool since you have two sides to cut with. I have been watching the new Dual Survival show and one of the guys is using the Condor double edge knife, forgot which one it was. What an awesome tool, but looks more like a smatchet.
Thanks for the input

So exactly what trails are you going to cut in NYC.?

No, I live in NYC but travel up state (just below Canada) where we have hunting property. Our land is in Adirondack Park, thick woods up there, but beautiful. I would only be transporting it in my truck out of the City.
