A new beginning.

This morning when I walked into my office, my boss had sent everyone via email the weekly newsletter. I forwarded it to my wife like I always do. I told her in the email I thought my boss cared little of demoralizing his staff and that his policies would eventually drive everyone off.

FIve minutes later I was up in his office with another staff member and was terminated, with the excuse that I was "using company emails for personal business." I think he was monitoring me, and I pissed him off. ...but know what?

NOW I AM FREE!

This is good. My wife is good with it too. I drove by the hospital to tell her to her face the sad, I mean GOOD news. I'm still a little shaken... I'm 46 and I've never quit a job before nor have I ever walked off a job. I just wasn't raised that way.

So here I am. Before I had no time to do anything. Now I have time to do EVERYTHING. I'm going to take this weekend to get my head straight, then I'm hitting the shop with a vengeance come Monday morning. I just scored a website from AV. I have a run of tappers in the works that I'll be rolling out by the end of next week. I have 4-5 knives in progress. I should be okay, but any hope of getting that new Harley this year just got shot down in flames!

Also, for anyone who wants to get a hold of me, the address you've been sending me stuff no longer works. Its my work addy. Use the yahoo address under my sig. Soon as I work out how to use my new website I'll have an address through that.

Okay, I am off to the shop. See you fellas in a few. Peace :D out!

After a few days, when the boss calls up and needs you back, The fun part will begin.

Can you say "Consultant" , "Double my salary and half the hours". :)

I hope it all works out for you Jeff.

Congratulations on your firing!! (never thought I'd hear myself say that.) ;)

I hope everythings turns out well for you and your wife. Now start cranking out those blades. :)

I'll tell you what... You certainly have the right attitude. Getting let go from a job is often the best thing that can happen to someone. But, it all depends on that person's attitude. Best of luck! I thought the good news was going to be that you got a spot of dirt on one of your immaculate shop benchtops and got to use a new cleaner to remove it! :D Yes, I make fun of other people when I'm jealous...

Did you burn any bridges on the way out the door? That can be very satisfying when you have been dealing with gross ignorance and are finally relieved of the need to shut up.

Having spent years as a consultant, I came to appreciate the little pleasures like that. Typically consultants are not the most greatly appreciated people in the workplace. They use consultants to get things they can't do accomplished and then have to get rid of them in order to claim sole credit.

Congratulations! I hope your endeavors make you rich and happy.

I went through the same thing 8 yrs. ago. I had been working construction on a condo project for 8 yrs. when one morning they called me in and laid me off. I was glad but I was disappointed too. Like you I had never been fired or laid off from a job in 27 yrs., matter of fact I had been sought after by other local construction companies. So this was actually something that blind sided me. But after the initial shock, I got mad, I didn't get the benefit of telling them to kiss my a**. They didn't even give me a reason, just here's your check now get. I just wish I would have had an idea this was coming so I could have had time to express my feelings toward them.

Anyway, 2 years later I went fultime knifemaking and thats where I've been ever since, its been worrisome at times but it sure is nice not having to put up with a** holes making big money off my labor. Just keep up the good throughts and attitude and all will be just fine. I do believe most things happen for a reason.

Now get to grinding, your the boss now. ;)

Jeff it was me last week and You this week! Aint it fun? I havent spent this much time in my shop for 3 years. I may get a bowie done today.

Congratulations! I'm sure you'll make the best of it. Its not saying as much when your my age, but I've never been fired and have only quit one job in my life, so I kind of know the feeling. That just reinforces how bad the situation was when you have that kind of record, and your still happy to be out of there!
Now get to work you unemployed slacker! ;)

Don't worry , I've known many who have changed jobs and professions later in life and found things were much better. And it isn't as if you didn't have anything to fall back on . Now you can get serious about knife making - go to it !!

yep, congratulations Jeff on your termination! It has been pretty obvious that you haven't been happy there for quite a while. Now a world of opportunity is open for you and I hope you succeed well in any endeavor you pursue. Congratulations!

:)

Jeff-

That's pretty much how I decided to go full-time.

I wouldn't have just done it, the leap scared me too much, and I didn't have the gumption to jump.

But I went in to the gym one day to get my pay-check (worked there as a personal trainer) and the boss started accusing me of stuff that was totally made up and untrue.

He's a BIG BIG dude, and it got to the point where I asked him if "I'm gonna' get my f'n money or not?"

Finally I told him, "I hate to see it end this way, but for whatever reason this was your choice to approach me like this. I WILL NOT ever be back here again."

I was a full-time maker the next day, and that was over 4 years ago.

Sometimes things take a turn that scares the $hit out of 'ya, but work out well in the end.

Like my folks always say, "It all works out in the wash." :D

Keep driving buddy.

-Nick-

Don´t worry, buddy. Just keep making good knives and strive to be professional and that will make you happy and provide you a decent living.
Good luck!

Good luck Jeff. I'm your age too and that is what would have to happen to me for me to take the plunge into fulltime knifemaking. I know you will make it work. ;)
