Just about 2 or 3 weeks ago I was reading every elses threads about getting they're 42s and stared in awe as I stared at pics and thought... "Man, I can't wait till I get a 42..."

Well that wait is over... I even expected it to come wednesday but nope. I got in the car and my dad said those beautiful words... "You got a package in the mail today."

I was silent the way home...

Well my comments:

Whoever said it was right, the anodization is kind of tacky. I wonder if I can get it removed or will it just come off with regular use? The weight is impressive but I'm not too surprised of it since I have a cheapie from Lousiana that weighs just about the same. My blade doesn't slice through paper it kind of rips through it. So it didn't come that sharp, but I hope to fix that soon... I thought the sheath fit ok and not as bad as people said... until I put it on my belt. I have to force it in (belt and bali!) and force it out so I hope to order one of Clay's Inverted V's sometime. Mine also has a slight wobble and one of the pivot screws looks bigger than the other. It doesn't really affect my flipping I'm just wondering if anyone else had these small defects. Would tightening the Torx screw fix the wobble??

Anyway finally I would like to tell all the newbies to the art of the Balisong who are looking for the best out there, that the search should stop at the Benchmade Model 42.

TheOne, I mentioned that the anodization is tacky (IMO). I don't know how to remove it, or how fast it wil rubb off from using it, but only the area where the handle rubs your hand will wear out.
About your sharpness test, my dad always told me not to cut paper with my knives, as it dulls the blade.
And I wouldn't worry about the wobble you mentioned, my two BM's have some wobble too, but it should be gone when you latch it open or closed.
My BM 42A has a very small air pocket next to the pivot pin, and I hope that my handle won't start cracking.
Enjoy your new knife!

Well I only do that because I see the guy on the Knife Collectors show do it all the time. Oh well, how would you test the sharpness of a blade?

Thanks, I will enjoy the knife!

(except for the anodization) I thought it was ok the first 10 minutes. Then the ugly purple and pink spots that mine has started to really annoy me. I like the sleek, sharp look of the original Ti colors. I really wish there was some way I could restore that to my handles

Well, I told ya so

I think if you remove the anodized finish, it may look even worse.

I thought the same too. It's not that bad of a sheath, since you are getting it for free (at least I did). But it was kinda hard to get it looped in the belt.

I had the exact same defect with one of my 42s. The result was that I had to tork the screw in with a lot of force, to tighten up the alignment, that I was a bit scared of stripping the screw. The defect never adversely affected its flipping performance though.

Yeah, the 42 is a nice one and worth the $110-$130--if you have to, mow some lawns for a few months! Just don't settle for a Jaguar.

And If you've got some extra cash, check out the BM45 and BM30. Both are out of production, but very nice also. I prefer the 45 overall because of its weight. And the 30 is just so cute, being so small at 3".

To test the sharpness, try cuting a piece of steak!

I've had a BM 45 for some years now (btw, I just cut myself with it yet again -- no feeling quite like that one). The only two balisongs I own are the 45 and a smaller model, a 34. Both stainless, of course. I've never had a Jaguar, but I once considered buying one just to practice flipping and save some wear and tear on the BMs. I noticed your disparaging remark regarding the Jaguar. Could you elaborate? Just curious.

What remark?

And BTW people, I've gotten used to the anodization on the handles. I still want a regular 42 for my next purchase though

I'm sorry, the remark was snipped out of the accompanying quote. Capt. Billy recommended "just don't settle for a Jaguar." I just wanted to know why, as I own two BMs and am considering purchasing a Jaguar.

If you have a couple BM Balisongs, why would you want a Jaguar? They are great beginer knives, low in cost, and the best made $20 knockoff you can buy. Its a knock off of a BM 239, or 259. But it is a good enough knockoff to have a knockoff of it made!

Know what, I ordered a 42 a week or two ago, and ordered a couple Jags last Sat.! Once I get my 42, I will probably never use the Jags. I might carry the Jag on me more though, just in case a cop desides that it is illegal that day. Even if proven legal in court, I wouldn't get the knife back. What a system! Best of luck!

Well Revenant, I and other forumites have commented on Jags before but here's a brief summary:

Pros:
1. Relatively cheap ($15-$30)
2. Easy to find, purchase
3. You get a good one once in a while.

Cons:
1. Even the good ones pale in comparison to BM (IMO and what I've heard from EVERYBODY). Which means pins break within months, handles wobble like crazy, handles break within a couple years.
2. You'll usually get a bad one. If that's the case then you have pin breakage within weeks sometimes days, handles wobble a lot more, handles break within months.

(I'm not too sure about the handle breakage part but they definately have been known to break.)

And then there's always the thick handles. The handles on a Jag are almost twice as thick as your BM 45. And Jags are heavy. I didn't list these facts as Pros or Cons since they can be either according to your personal preference.

And Harvie was right, you would probably only need one if you wanted something that will make you feel better for beating up.(Punishing my BM42 with rigorous manipulations isn't good for my heart.) Or there's always the legalities. There is always a chance you will get caught and confiscation takes place. Unless you live in Oregon or a similar place where knife laws aren't so strict. In that case you would also feel better giving your $20 Jag away, then your priceless BM Bali wouldn't you

Hmm, well I didn't realize I could be sued for such a libel statement

Well, here's some elaboration... Jaguar's SUCK SH*T. They're cheap imitations of the real balisongs which you already own. I was a fool to think they were worth the $25 invesment. The three jags I own have broke, one of them was fixed with repinning but it's too much of a hassle to fix the others.

Search the vast posts about it here in the bladeforums if you need help deciding on a jaguar purchase.
