You may remember my recent question about finding Strops. Well, that was the key. I read the J. Talmadge FAQ again, cleaned my stones and got really determined. Things were going well and once I got done with the fine stone I pulled out an old belt and tried to imitate what I'd seen barbers do in old western movies. The fingernail test showed a new level of "grip" that I had never had before. Dare I try that test which I have never passed? I took the BM 910 to my leg, and Lo and Behold! Poppity Pop Pop Pop! On both the primary and secondary blades. Now I have two little bald spots on my leg which I promptly showed my wife, ala another thread I read in here.

Many thanks to all who helped me with my strop question, and those who asked and patiently answered all our questions regarding sharpening. Now the sound of my stryker snapping open is music to my ears!

Welcome to the world of balding appendages. I am sure when people see my arms they may wonder if I suffer from some strange type of hair loss. Especially since I am obviously not going bald. I don't shave my legs though as here in Florida that could mean I am a weight lifter/ body builder or something else entirely, not that there is anything wrong with that

Enjoy your new shaving hobby my friend and welcome to the hairless club for men!

I don't know if your barber movies showed one of the stropping tricks that I learned here. It is a good idea (not absolutely necessary but a good idea) when you reach the end of a stropping stroke to flip the blade over for your return stroke by rotating the blade edge up and over 180 degrees. I used to just strop through and then flip the blade after leaving the strop. This has more risk of tipping the back of the knife/razor up too soon and cutting the strop or dulling the edge.

A particular advantage of the method above is when you use short strokes. I believe that as you approach the end of your stropping sequence you should use shorter and lighter strokes. This is easier to do if you use the method of edge-up rotation.

Mike, are you trying to imply something about weightlifters? I'm a weightlifter you know. (Tries to look threatening). Grrrrr.

James
