Yet another blade nut hooked by BKT

Yep, I bought my first (and certainly not my last) Becker knife. I did a quick wrap on the handle, after realizing quickly that the bare handle is a pain if I'm not wearing gloves. After inspecting the wrap, I realized I was a bit distracted and didn't really put the time into to make it look good. Oh well...I'll fix it up another day.

My first impression is that this thing is a beast for a small blade. The thickness of the spine, I think, it what will set Becker apart from the other knives I've had and taken hunting, camping, and hiking. The one thing that I am seeing as the downfall is the sheath. It does dull my blade, which was disappointing, but it was quickly brought back to shaving-sharp with very little time on the sharpener.

If I get a slow day at work this week, I'll head out into the woods we own and do some comparison tests with the BK14, Benchmade Fixed Griptilian, and Kershaw Mini-Cyclone (very similar in size).

Sweet esky my man. Welcome. It sure won't be your last Becker that's for dam sure.

Edit: for the sheath take a small file or nail file and rub it where the edge meets the sheath, rub it good and give the edge some clearance and voila! No more dulling

Very nice job. Great way to start your way on to owning everything Becker makes. Don't laugh, it will happen.

Congrats on your knife - you'll love it.

I gave up on the stock "sheath" (a real disappointment) and just ordered one from Goose.

Yep, it always starts with a purchase of a harmless, innocent, unassuming BK14...

But don't be fooled,

it is a well though out and planned gateway drug...

that starts calling you and leading you to purchase, bigger, and more dangerous blades...

You fool yourself into thinking, oh, I can stop at any time.

Must run....auction on a BK9 is about to end.

I read that tread title as something completely different and cringed in pain at first, then re-read and just realized it was just another victim of addiction. Carry on.

Oh man. I think I just realized how you read that. Cringe is right!

More on topic, what's your next Becker going to be?

Congrats and welcome to the sickness.

It gets better, as do the blades you get. E designs some tough ass steel, and Kabar brings it to you with the best practices imaginable. Great combo for bringing your steel dreams to life.

Welcome and get down with the sickness.

Oh, great lookin' wrap.

I love me my ESKabar!!! It was my second Becker, and the one I carry everyday. :D

Got it off ebay, it's alright. I wish it had a thumb "push off " to get the blade out easier/faster. Conceptually I like AZ welke's better, based on the picture.

I managed to get a little time out in the back 40 between the morning and afternoon rain. Wasn't real sure what I wanted to do, other than see what the BK14 could do. I also had the Kershaw Mini-Cyclone on me, so since that has been my EDC, I decided to put them head-to-head. Yeah, it wasn't really a fair fight, in all honesty! Both knives had a fresh edge on them and were shaving sharp.

The obligatory feather stick. I chose a really bad stick to do this on, since it was old and brittle. The Kershaw had an easier time of it, due to the thinner blade. The BK14 was more easily able to make the deeper cuts. I didn't spend much time on this, because I didn't have time to start and put out a fire!

I found an old cage and thought, "hmmmm....wonder if I could pop the rings off of that thing without much trouble. The result - BK14 was done before I knew it. Popped right through with a slight twist of the wrist. The Kershaw never made it. Maybe if I had gloves on, but I was risking damage to the knife if I twisted it much more.

Found and old snow fence and the fencing material was nice and thick. The BK14 slid right on through it. The Kershaw took 4 or 5 sawing strokes to get through.

Of course, I had to try to throw them at something. No practical purpose, just thought it'd be something to occupy me on the walk back. Low and behold, the BK14 stuck right away. I was about 8 feet away and the BK14 turned over one full time and stuck. Then I figured, as long as I'm testing, let's give the folder a shot. It stuck too! It turned over twice in the same distance to the tree. I figured it was too easy and tried to repeat the test. About 1/2 stuck with the BK14 and I couldn't repeat with the Kershaw. Not that they're intended to do this, but it's a fun way to pass a little time!

Not that I needed much convincing, but the Esky will remain the EDC and the Kershaw will get relegated to backup duty. I've also put the first scratches in it, so if anyone wants to pilfer it, I'll know it's mine!
