There just isn't enough discussion of this knife so I thought I would stoke the Forums with this Commander Question:

I sent my '99 CN Commander into EKI for a long overdue servicing. In keeping with their excellent reputation the service was unsurpassed in my experience with any company.

What came back seems to be a completely rebuilt knife that may even be the new and improved Commander that Mr. Emerson elluded to in his Christmas post. Not being a Commander enthusiast I thought that I would ask the experts here amongst us what they thought.

My Commander originally had the usual EKI specs with regard to handle, scale thickness and hardware. What I got back was a knife with the following changes:

1. The scales differ in that they are beveled at a tighter radius which makes them feel much flatter. The thickness seems to be a tiny bit different but that may just be the bevel fooling my hand.

2. Also, all of the scale screws are countersunk flush with the scale's surface.

3. The finger recess is asymetrical so that there is a small relief that allows direct access the the liner when disengaging the lock-up.

4. The pivot screw is fush with the scale on one end.

Are these cahnges simply in keeping with the current version of the Commander or are these different from current Commander specs?

Mr. Hollister...You there?
Being a Suspect with extensive knowledge of the Commander might you shed some light on the above mentioned specs?
Thanks!

Ark:

I too will second your opinion of EKI customer service. I have had nothing but ecxellent customer relations and service from everyone at the office.

As far as your 'newly built' knife, It just so happens that I have my 2000 Commander and my 2001 PSARK in front of me and indeed there are definite differences.

1. My PSARK basically has all the "newer" details that you described
in your post. A flat (female portion) pivot screw, countersunk
scale screws and recessed liner lock. The scale bevel seems
tighter than the Commander as well.

2. The 2000 Commander has a dome (female portion) pivot screw.
The liner seems somewhat more exposed and resembles the liner in
my 98 Commander. The scale screws appear countersunk, but when you
draw you finger across them, they are slightly raised.

I was hoping that when EE mentioned 'The improved' Commander, that he was going to revert back to dimensions similar to the 98's. Maybe its just me, but I can't help but think the 98 series of Commanders were the ultimate production models.

:)

RAYE,
Thanks a lot for your comparison. I must say that I like the cahnges although I agree that the feel of the 98 handles were superb due in part to the thickness.

Ark, hard to say without seeing the knife in question. I will say that I doubt it as when you see the new Commander, there will be no doubt as to it's being the redesigned version.

Sounds like you may have had a CN with the thicker scales and they replaced them with the thinner (after mid '99) scales. The flat pivot you described has been standard on all models since mid 2000. The change was made due to the CQC7 series and the SARK. These models are tapped for "Tip Down" carry as well as the correct "Tip Up" carry. When the customer tried to move the clip to the (wrong) other end, the dome of the pivot would not allow the clip to sit flush. Rather then stock two kinds of pivot bolts, the domed ones were phased out with the remaining stock being used on the model not tapped on both ends. Because of this you may see 2000 SARKs and CQC7s with the flat pivot bolt and may see a 2001 Commander with a domed one, however as Commanders are coming with flat ones now, I assume they have used them all up.

ArkhamDrifter -
As a followup to John's and Ray's statements, I checked a Commander that I got in 2001.

Your description matches my 2000GT blade on a 2001 handle. The scales feel flatter, the screws are countersunk, the pivot screw is flush on the female side and the scale is relieved for access to the liner lock.
