Yet another forge question...

I just built a forge made from 10" diameter steel pipe (a similiar one was pictured on this forum earlier). I am going to line it with the ceramic wool and put a couple of firebricks in the bottom. Does anyone have a suggestion for a simple burner? I was thinking of using one of those small, blue propane bottles with the torch tip until I can build something better. Does anyone know if these will get a high enough temperature, and what the approximate burn time is?

I use a very simple venuri burner similar to the ones found at www.reil1.net/Forge.shtml . There are a pile of great burner designs at this web site, and several of the fellas here on the forms have made similar ones. They are cheap and relatively easy to build, and really do perform great. Check out Don Fogg custom knives site as well, as he shows several variations. My forge is the same basic size as what you have described, and I forge weld damascus with mine no problem. Good Luck.

Follow the link Clint gave. My very first sword building gas forge used the propane torches you were asking about. I had to keep adding and adding torches to get heat. By the time I finished I had 14 torches in it and it still didn't get as hot as I wamyed. I learned to build burners after that and they aren't hard at all. They really are kind of fun to build.

This may help???
