I just traded into a spike hawk that is beautiful but the head is secured to the handle via two pins that go through the side of the head & through the handle. There is obvious play and if not for the pins, the head would go flying on the first swing. This does not inspire any confidence for impact use, I feel the pins would simply split the handle quite easily. I could try and fit a new handle but this one is really nice. If you held this hawk up to the light and looked straight down the shaft, you can see light peeking through the eye.
I've also read here that soaking the head and handle in linseed oil or even antifreeze would expand the shaft, but I feel that the expansion would not be enough.
I was thinking of using some type of glue to inject into all the crevices to immobilize the head but I'm not sure of the best thing to use. I have Gorilla glue but I'm not sure I like it's properties for this application. Is there something that dries into a semi-hard state that would provide a firm hold but also some shock absorption? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
