Fixed display, now trying to install a cable modem. However the computer can not connect to the modern to install the drivers for it so I assume the motherboard needs drivers for the ethernet connection to the modem. However the aopen ftp website has been down for the past three days. I have found other drivers for other motherboards elsewhere but not the mx4ls one. Does anyone know of another source for its drivers. The modem works fine as I brought over another computer and set it up fine.

Hi Cliff

I'll do my very best to help you and I'll try to track down the drivers for you. The first thing we need to do is identify exactly the hardware on the motherboard etc. One of the easiest programs I've found for a general user to use for this is called Belarc Advisor. Could you go to:
http://www.belarc.com
and grab their free download. Please run the program and email the results to me at omni@phile.com.au

I'll then get right on to it.

Cheers

Cliff, I just switched to cable www and when I hooked up my modem I plugged up the usb cable and the phone jack type line that came with the thing. I couldn't get it to work worth a crap. Called tech support and they came out and disconnected the usb cable. The guy said if you have both hooked up it confuses the computer. Works ok now.

Cliff, I don't think there are any drivers that are needed for a cable modem. Do this: open Control Panel >> System. Click on the "Hardware" tab and then click on the "Device Manager" button. In the hardware list look for "problem hardware" devices...devices marked with red or yellow. Pay particular attention to the "Network Adapters."

All of the cable modems I have used reQuire either 10BaseT (Cat5) network cables or USB cables. If you are trying to connect to your cable modem with a EIthernet cable then your Network Adapter will require the correct drivers installed. If you are trying to connect to your cable modem with a USB cable then your "Universal Serial Bus" (USB) drivers must be correctly installed.

You will most likey find network and USB drivers at the OEM syetemboard website where you downloaded your video drivers.

P.S. I always connect to DSL and cablem modem equipment with Cat5 ethernet cable via my network adapter...never had a problem with that as long as I have the correct network adapter installed.

Stay sharp Cliff!

P.S.S.: The hardware you described should be fine with XP bud...but I'd suggest you up the ram to 512mb...you get much better XP performance with 512mb or 1gb of rambo.

Yes, they are there, but the ftp website where they are hosted (ftp.aopen.com) is down and they don't list any other mirrors.

This is a charity item, hence the complete lack of any hardware drivers.

For just those drivers, go to ...

Yes, all the files are hosted on a ftp website which is down. On saturday it would open and then immediately close. Then shortly after it could not locate the site, today it went back to accepting an connection and then closing. I posted a message on their forum however there has been no responce yet.

No probs, Cliff. Try this site: http://asia.aopen.com.tw/download.aspx

That's the Asia/Pacific website (based in Taiwan). I just checked and went through the selection procedure for you motherboard and chose the FTP download location from Taiwan and it downloaded fine.

If you have probs, let me know exactly which drivers you want and I'll email them to you.

Cheers

using both connection types confuses my computer also, go with one or the other and make sure the driver is installed, also if you have aol settings saved you may have to delete some of them, they clashed with my DSL settings and overrode them somehow when i first got dsl. nothing like that happened when i got cable though, possibly because i had already deleted them.

Thanks for the help, it works fine now. I also have two computers connected over an internet. Once is an older model which is just going to be used for the kids. I am trying to get file sharing to work however with no success even though the LAN readily allows internet connections from the host computer.

Cliff: Enable/install the NetBEUI protocol on each computer. Then make sure File & Printer Sharing For Microsoft networks is enabled for each comuter. The make each computer a member of the "SHARP" :) workgroup. You may have to restart each machine after some of these settings. Then share a folder on each machine. Make sure each machine is connected to the same network and you should be able to browse the shared folders on each machine.

Alternatively you could bind NetBEUI to TCPIP but IMHO that creates security issues with allow NetBEUI to cross your router...better in my opinion to disable NetBEUI over TCPIP and rely on the good old NetBEUI protocol which is not routable.

Q's $.02

Problem was, as it usual, something moronic. Using the network setup wizard I configured the connection between the two computers and the second accessed the internet fine. I also had file sharing enabled however when I made a folder shared it didn't show up under the local network. The reason was that I didn't have the client for microsoft networks also selected.
