Yet another Work Sharp question: What angle is the Spyderco Native 5?

Haven't committed to buying my own WS but a friend has one and I desperately need to clean up the edge on my Native 5. But I'm a little worried he'll mess it up because he doesn't know the blade angle. Recommendations?

17°~20° dps would be average.

Since they are hand-finished, variations are to be expected. One of mine was 20° on one side, 15° on the other.

Use a sharpie to blacken the edge then make an unpowered pass to see where the belt hits the edge and adjust the angle as needed.

Work Sharp will change the factory V edge to a convex edge, so angle is not exact anyway.

As above, use a Sharpie to know when the belt is hitting the edge.

But I recommend not giving a valued knife to someone unless you're 100% sure they know what they are doing. Messing up can happen very quickly on a powered system.

The original worksharp is one speed only and it's FAST. Let me see if I can dig up the video of the guy totally messing up his Spyderco on one...

First sharpening at around 6:45 and results at around 8:45:

It's just a tool, but depending on the operator's skill, results can vary a LOT. From really nice, to rather bad. Just FYI.

Brian.

Golden Spidies are sharpened to 15 per side and if it's a newer Native then it would have been done on the automated sharpener which has good consistency from what I have seen.

That said,

There is no specific edge angle for knives, it's whatever works for the steel and the cutting task. Thinner is always better FYI.
