At least 10,000 coins believed to be from the Roman era have been uncovered in Shropshire.

Officials from Shropshire Council's Museum Service said the coins, thought to be from 320 AD to 340 AD, were found in a large storage jar.

They said the haul, found by an amateur treasure hunter, had been sent to experts in London to examine.

Councillor Stephen Charmley said it was the largest coin hoard to be found in the county in modern times.

Metal detector luck strikes again! This fellow found this hoard on only his third ever outing with his detector! Hmm, must take a look on ebay...

Very cool. Makes you wonder what other sort of things are buried in a field or garden or something in England. Weird that they are both English so close together though. One would have thought the Norse and Romans would be burying stuff all over the place. You guys in France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain etc. need to get to work!

If I lived in Europe, metal detecting is all I'd be doing!!! :D
I had a real good metal detector a few years ago and went out all the time. It would even go under water. I never found squat except for loose change and one piece of gold jewelry that was worth $16. :D
I guess places like this have been picked over a dozen times.

Ah, but the Staffordshire hoard was found in a field which had been deep ploughed for the first time. The plough had dug the goodies up and there were pieces lying on the surface to be picked up. The field has probably been gone over by detectorists any number of times before.

You notice too that the pot the Roman coins were stored in has had the top sliced off by a plough and some of the coins were scattered about. That made finding it easier.

A number of major finds have been made after pasture was ploughed for the first time or a deep plough was used for the first time.
The Roman Palace at Fishbourne in Sussex was found by a backhoe driver digging a trench for a water main! He'd gone through a wall and about 5 yards of Roman mosaic flooring before he stopped.

Probably isn't a lot of coins and other treasure hidden in the USA, I'd venture to guess?
After all we haven't been settled nearly as long to have much.

True, but there probably isn't all that much in the UK either but there have been 3 spectacular finds this year, which distorts the picture a bit!
