Take a look at this ePrey item

Bone grip

This would suggest that mine like it (remember?) *does* have the same flat grip plate as original!

Anyone else know? Ferrous and I thought the flat plate on mine , which it the same as the one in the ePrey item, was a replacement...this makes it seem that the flat plate was original. Do you know if the flat was common?

Uwinv the top of my old AC kukri's are both flat where the buttcap would be.
It would be easier to put a flat cap on a bone piece, don't know about ivory, but if it was made flat it would save a bit of precious material which would just be covered up with metal of some sort.
I think flat would be original, but that's just an educated guess.
