i have heard that when buying or cutting steel from sheet stock that it is better to cut with vs. lenth because of how the steel is rolled out? is this hog wash? or is there any hard science behind this? thanks, laurence

I certainly don't want to interfear with your request from Paul Bos . I ran tests on several types of steel after reading a note that Corbet Sigman had cut some carbon steel across the grain and had noted better edge holding. My tests were made on ATS-34 and 440-C. I found that with comparative testing that edge holding on both increased 15 to 20% when the steel was cut across the grain. Hope this helps. Frank

That sure wasn't very clear was it .Cut the steel across the short side. When the steel is produced the grain runs the same way as the lenghth or just remember that in regular bar stock the grain goes with the lenghth as well of course . Sure does make a difference in edge holding but you have to have access to sheet stock and you have to have access to a good cutting system. Frank
