I’m no fisherman. But in an emergency, fish can be a good resource. I’m thinking about low effort Fishing for Dummies.

So I got interested in these things. They only hooked four reviews, but each one praises them.

The competing system is the speed hook. Speed hooks must pack smaller than these yo-yo reels. The smaller your emergency bag, the more important that is.

Is there any other advantage to one system over the other? Are these worth fooling with?

When they first ones came out they said they could be used for snares too. I have a couple that I have carried but they are not legal to use here. As for fishing try Youtube. There are videos about guys using them.

I use them for catfish regularly. I find that if you adjust the tension (yes, they are adjustable) they can get anything from small sunfish to large catfish. I set 2-10 depending on the situation and leave them overnight if I'm catfishing. I do this about once a week to cook a nice lunch over a fire where I work.

I've never used mine, only watched a few people use theirs. The people I watched set them up, came back the next day and had a catfish on all of them. (they set 6) I believe they work pretty good, especially if you have a large creek or a river to set them in.

Thanks, guys. It sounds like they’re a good system.

Can anybody compare them with the speed hook?

I use both. I like these better for catfish because they are likely to be on there all night and the speedhook doesn't provide line tension (just hook tension) to tire them out and keep them from going under logs or similar things that could cause you to loose your gear.
I like speedhooks better for panfish because they seem to be more efficient at hooking faster fish.
They both have their uses and work great. Try a couple and let us know what you think.....

SpeedHooks are very light but longer than YoYo reels. YoYo reels are palm size and quite light, lighter than they look.

We use these for catfish. They will catch and hold pretty much whatever though. I had never thought of using them as a snare but i'm sure it could be done. LIke someone else mentioned, they are adjustable and very light. If we leave a catfish on one for more than a few minutes you can pretty much just pick them up as they tire out from the back and forth of the yo-yo's tension.

Spent a lot of my youth checking these. They work great for for catfish, brim and white perch. I've got a 10 pack in one of my bags. Good way to get a lot of food for minimal effort so long as you have a boat. Only problem is around here, sometimes you'll just have a head waiting for you. Watch out for gators.

I use them and they will work on most anything, speed hooks as well work great, here in N.Y. I can't have an unattended line or more then two lines to be legal but in a survival situation all is fair.

Thanks fellows.

I’ve ordered a set. What else do I need to use the system? I’m thinking mono line, sinkers, and small hooks…does that sound right? Does artificial bait work?
