I've been out of the loop for some time and was dissapointed to find that both the Yojimbo folder and the Bram Frank Gunting are discontinued. When did this happen? Are they difficult to get a hold of brand new, or are there enough of them on the market to satisfy the late-comers? Help is greatly appreciated.

I believe the Gunting was never really all that popular, and I have no idea as to how often they show up for sale. The Yojimbo on the other hand is very hard to come by, and if you do see one for sale chances are that it will be a pretty high price. I've seen some on ebay go for well over $200. They show up rarely on the "For Sale" SubForum here, and some are on ebay from time to time. Good luck in finding/getting one.

Spydiewiki says that the Gunting left in 2004, and the Yo left in 2006.

The Gunting I believe has been gone since late 2004. The Yojimbo according to my past catlogs has been discontinued since late 2006 or early 2007. Both were Golden Colorado made Spyders and now both have overnight collector status. And don't forget the fixed blade brother of the Yojimbo>> the Ronin I believe was disco'd sometime around either late 2004 or early 2005.

And all of those models dryed up pretty bad within a year to 18 months of their halted production.

Don't feel to bad brother because I'm feverishly looking for a Ronin myself. Good to have you back in the fold though :)

Both are available but be prepared to pay the price. You missed the boat. Spydie "investors" have these models ready to ship. Post a thread on the "want to buy" forums then get the KY jelly and hang on. You could also check ebay but the pickins are slim even there. Bram has some aftermarket company making his blades now and New Graham Pharmacy stocks them. They are on the shelf and ready to ship, basically at the old Spyderco prices. There's even a "package" deal that ships with a DVD and a trainer. You might want to look into that also.

But be prepared to pay the price for the original Spydie models. Just think back to the original Lampoon's Vacation movie where the mechanic was fooling around with that big wrench and he asked Clark Griswold, "...just how much you got boy?" That's sort of the situation you're in right now. Sleep tight. :D

Thanks for the help guys.. Kind of discouraging overall but then again so is being a knife knut on a budget. The outsourced lapu lapu Mr. Frank offers now doesn't really appeal. If I'm gonna buy a Gunting it will be a Spydie no question.
Again timely responses were appreciated.

Guntings don't sell nearly as well on forums as they do on eBay. If you keep your eyes open and look around you can usually pick one up for around $150. Yojimbos are a little more rare, especially the black model. But it isn't unheard of for the blues to sell between $120-$150 on these and other forums.

It's down market right now with a lot of models becoming extremely scare, sellers are holding since prices have dropped considerably.

If you have money, buy through eBay. If you have time, buy through the forums.

Don't feel too bad brother because I got in a bad way financially a while back and I even had to sell my Spyderco Gunting Trainer :( I had 3 other highly prized Spyders that had to go at that time as well. I even had to sell my original fixed blade Spyderco Perrin model and what really smarted on that one was that I got offered almost 3 times as much as I sold it for within 2 weeks :o

But like these other fellows are saying they do pop up from time to time. And you might just happen upon one in a pawn shop. Because it's unbelievable what people have been pawning in the past few months. So take heart you're not alone in that boat :D

I regret that I had the chance to buy a Yojimbo new in the box and didn't jump on it, but I'm very satisfied with my P'Kal. It's not as robust as the Yojimbo but in some respects, it's a better design for its intended purpose.
